American football would be more of a manager game than a player game. Same with Ice Hockey only due to the amount of substitutions, penalties and strategy (due to unlimited subs).
Baseball, rugby, curling, tennis, snooker would all work good as player games.

What about a racing game where you start your career racing a pathetic 12 year old Ford Fiesta or something, then earn your rights to become one of the best racers in Touring Cars or something similar?

I agree, Hockey can actuallt prove to be a really playable game, and certainly a player-game

Actually american football (don't think I know much) is kind of difficult to tell, as you are supposed to follow a selected play, not changing it, wherever you play, so it's kinda manager But maybe you know a way I don't

Yeah. Then you get points on how well you follow the instructions, or in real life, you get your ass chewed out. Could be fun.

and you could break plays and really mess things up, and get in trouble with the manager, even if you got a touch down!

Well, that way seems viable, though I believe Hockey is more of a realizable thing
