How to pass correctly?

I've been playing the game since yesterday, and really enjoying it. But every time I pass (z) my player lobs the ball instead of kicking it over the ground... How can I give a propper pass?

I think Z is normally the shoot button, try X.

Nope, doesn't work for me..

go to options -> edit controls -> click advanced (for advanced controls) and set your keys for passing.
