Totally agree. I think a points series of several weekly online tournaments could work really well. The other potentially interesting idea could be an online "ranked match" setup, a la Trackmania. TM really got online racing right in so many ways, there's a lot to be learnt from that system.
How do TM matches work? I haven't played it in a while, nor do I have it installed.

TM has an online ranking system, so that when you play online "official" races you get a ranking against the other players. These rankings determine points scoring.
In the earlier TM games (ie. TM Sunrise), these rankings were worked out based on comparative rankings of all competitors, and you could lose ranking points. The later TM just allows you to gain points relative to the people you beat. I preferred the older system, although convincing the higher ranked players to play you officially was occasionally difficult....
Trackmania ranking is weird... you do get more points for beating higher ranked opponent but the most important part is: you get points for beating anyoneso it all comes down to how often you play. If you play for hours every day you'll climb to 2000 smth position even if you're just mediocre. If you play once a week you can be awesome and you'll end up 20000 smth at best

That's why I preferred TM Sunrise system, not the current one. It worked more like a chess ranking ie. you could lose points as well as gain them. Agreed that the current TM system favours people who play it ots, rather than play it well.

@King Rob,
Is "BlackCapedMan" really your steam ID ? I can't find any user by that name. Your steam account ID is displayed at the top right of the steam client.
Also, I've added everyone mentioned on the first post to my Steam friend's list.
GMT-5 Zomgman
GMT+0 Cookie Monster
GMT+0 King Rob
GMT+1 Sida79
GMT+2 raknet
GMT+5.30 Tachyon
What this means is the usual "we're screwed" routine, based on the 10.30 difference between Zomgman and Tachyon. Assuming we'll be driving on weekends so everyone can make it more easily and those two having to sleep etc. (my apologies in advance if sleep is against your religion/way of life or anything!) we have these choices:
7.00 Zomgman - 17.30 Tachyon (12,13,14 others)
8.00 Zomgman - 18.30 Tachyon (13,14,15 others)
9.00 Zomgman - 19.30 Tachyon (14,15,16 others)
10.00 Zomgman - 20.30 Tachyon (15,16,17 others)
11.00 Zomgman - 21.30 Tachyon (16,17,18 others)
12.00 Zomgman - 22.30 Tachyon (17,18,19 others)
