There are several reasons for this. After every new product release I end up spending a month or two fixing, tweaking and adding some of those features that people scream loudest for, but once the game is stable I often find that I really need to ‘down tools’ and just forget about coding for a while. Since I was very happy with NSS5 around the end of September I took my foot off the pedal found myself relaxing a bit more than usual. I was playing a lot of games in my spare time (Civ 5, From Dust and Driver San Francisco being the excellent culprits), Lucy and went away to Portugal for a holiday, and I began to start thinking about other projects. Sometimes starting work on a new game can be fatal because it can be difficult to stay motivated about the previous one and give it the time and support the players deserve, but this is not the case with NSS5. I am still passionate about the game and will continue to improve it. However, there are some developments going on behind the scenes at New Star Games which could potentially be huge for the future of New Star Soccer. I can’t reveal anything at the moment but these developments are the main reason why I haven’t updated the game for a while. I have a huge list of exciting features that I want to include though and I fully intend to see this through, only it is more likely to all happen in one large update rather than lots of incremental ones. That said, my good friend John Holden (Statto) has been working on the database  recently so I will be releasing a minor update soon.<br />

I haven’t been completely idle this month though, oh no. New Star GP fans will be excited to know that a new version will be available very soon. I mentioned earlier that I often need to step away from the keyboard after a project and stop coding for a while, which I did, and it can often be tough to get back into ‘the zone’ and find that spark of inspiration and motivation again. I can tell you now that this difficult phase has past and at last my new project has completely gripped my attention and I am firing on all cylinders again. In fact it is with great effort that I have dragged myself away from the game code to write this newsletter! So what is it? I hope you will be excited to hear that New Star Soccer will be coming to iOS and Android devices! Yes, a mobile version of the game is progressing very nicely and I hope it will be ready for release very soon. It won’t be anywhere near as feature rich as NSS5 as I have stripped the game right back to the bare essentials and the match engine will be a much simpler affair (think Angry Birds crossed with Flick Kick Football). However, it will offer a whole host of leagues and cups to compete in and the career mode will have real depth to it whilst leaving room for plenty of improvements in future updates. Hopefully it will provide an addictive little footy game which will feed your New Star habit on the go. There may even be a free Flash version so you can try it in your web-browser before you buy!<br />

I want to immerse the you in an interesting and entertaining game-world where you never know what might occur next. That means more interaction with your boss, team mates, friends and so on, reports from the coaching staff and physios, press conferences, post match interviews, and possibly the hiring and firing of agents. All of this depends on time of course. I hope that the data update won't take more than 1 month but things <i>always</i> take longer than I hope. That would leave 2 months of coding for everything else which means it will be tight either way. There will inevitably be some updates after the official release but I really want to restrict these to minor tweaks and bug fixes so that I can focus on a mobile version of NSS (iOS/Android) and an update to NSGP before the end of the year. <br />

As you can see from the <a href="http://newstarsoccer.newstargames.com/index.php" target="_blank">NSS homepage</a> we are approaching 400 beta-testers already. That's pretty good considering that there is no demo, and the feedback has been extremely positive with a few bugs and bunch of feature requests. As long as we get a few thousand Premium Account holders once the game is officially released I will be happy and able to continue doing what I love - making games. :)</blockquote>

So rather than rush things I have decided to keep the game in beta until the start of the 2011-12 English football season. That will give me plenty of time to update all of the league and competition data, add new gameplay features and give the game a level of polish never seen before in a New Star Games product! If that release date seems a long way off don't worry - <b>I will be opening up the beta testing to everyone before the end of May.</b> (This option is already available for those 'in-the-know' but I will make a big announcement and put the sign-up links on the main site within the next few weeks. ;))<br />

So what exactly remains to be done? Aside from the aforementioned league data, I am currently adding all of the different kit styles, such as hoops, sleeves, chequered and so on. Then I will concentrate on adding more depth to the life-sim part of the game. Sure the relationships and various incidents are in place already but it still feels a little sparse. There are quite a few improvements to be made to the all-important match engine too. Aside from adding the ref and linesman (and possible the boss who may or may not shout instructions at you from the bench) I need to include different sized stadiums, particularly for the lower league clubs who currently play in venues the size of Wembley! Finally there is the aspect of balancing the game. By this I mean making sure that a players progression through the training challenges isn't too easy, and moving up the ranks doesn't happen too fast. Injuries should not occur too often but when they do the painkillers should not work if the injury is too serious. Shop items should be priced so that a player is not able to buy everything within a couple of seasons, but then wages at the big clubs need to be semi-realistic. I admit that this is an area that I have not perfected in the past but I will put a lot of focus on it this time around.<br />
<br />
One thing is for sure - I won't be able to please all of the people, all of the time. There will be a lot of NSS fans crying out for their most desired features (&quot;I want to have a son then continue playing his career!&quot; is a common one) but New Star Soccer 5 has been built entirely from scratch so it's not just a case of having every feature that was in NSS3 and 4 and adding more. It's a new game. A slick, streamlined, kick-ass mofo of a game admittedly but it's primary focus is on FUN. So it's possible that some of you will see it as a bit of a step back from the level of simulation in NSS4 but I truly believe that this allows me to focus on the really important aspects of the game and build something that I think will appeal to every football fan out there. So hang tight and trust me. It's gonna be awesome.<br />

This will be based on several key factors such as skills (how high you have built up your pace, shooting, passing etc) but most importantly your current form. If you are banging in goals for fun in the Premiership then your transfer value will rocket despite what your actual skill levels may be. Similarly, if you are having a bad run of form in the lower leagues then your value will plummet even if you do have great skills. The only way to get a superstar transfer value though (£50m+) will be to be brilliant in all aspects of the game. Another feature that I want to include is a player profile webpage for every player in NSS5. This will allow you to show off your current stats to anyone on the net - even if they don't have the game.<br />

As I said earlier, initially you will have a Free Account which will give you access to the leaderboards and player data for 10 matches. After this trial period you have 2 choices: <br />

1) Continue playing the game for free. You will still be able to view the leaderboards but you will not be able to update it, so effectively your position and worldwide status will be frozen. Also, as I mentioned in a previous blog post, the player data for teammates and opponents will be created from other NSS5 players. You will not have access to this data after the trial period with a free account. Finally, free account players will not be allowed to transfer to other clubs. Either you stick with the club you started with or you...<br />

2) Upgrade to a Premium Account. This will give you full access to all the online data, your stats will be updated on the leaderboard and you can transfer to any club in the world (the game will always run with a full database of leagues and clubs.) <br />

I haven't decided on the price of a premium account yet, so I would be interested to hear what you think is a reasonable amount. How does $20 sound (around £13 or €15)?<br />

If you are still reading I guess you are hoping to hear about a release date, right? Well currently I am changing web-host and upgrading to a better server which will hopefully be able to cope with all the online activity that NSS5 will bring. Gamewise I still need to add some final features to the match engine (mainly some AI improvements and an option for a 4-button control system.) I also need to edit the player sprites to allow for different kit designs, and the club database needs updating with promotions and relegations, but these things might happen during the beta-testing period. I hope to start some private testing in a couple of weeks, so keep an eye on the forum. Once I am happy that the sign-up system is working ok I will start taking pre-orders for the game. Early customers that purchase a Premium Account will get a discount, and will also get access to the beta version. If the open beta period goes well then I will release the game before the end of the European football season. However, if people feel that the game needs further development then I may not release it officially until the next football season begins in August. That is a worst case scenario (particularly for my bank balance!) but it will at least catch a wave of football excitement and even steal a march on FIFA, Pro Evo and Football Manager which normally aren't released until Autumn. Power to the little man! :D<br />

(For anyone confused about the version number, NSS2010 was an update to NSS4. Since NSS5 is a completely new version I have decided to go back to single number increments.) I spent the first few weeks writing a new database system and building a new competition engine which uses a simpler calendar. You no longer progress from day to day, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday... but simply click play and go straight to your next match. All of the club and stadium data has been ported across from NSS4 so each match is proceeded by a quick glimpse of where the match is taking place and how far the away team have to travel to get there.<br />

The new system is extremely slick and you should be able to whistle through a season in no time at all. One reason for this massive speed increase is that I have completely dropped the player database. That's right - there are no &quot;real-life&quot; players in the game at all. But don't panic, the matches will still feature 11 team mates. Currently these players are randomly generated but I have a BIG PLAN... Every person that buys NSS5 will be registered on the New Star Games server and all of the stats and abilities of their player will be recorded online. Not only will this mean that you can compare your player stats with everyone else in the world, but your team mates in the game will be generated using the data from the best 11 players in the world that currently play for your team. So the game is still a single-player experience (there will be no online multi-player) but the player database will be created by you, the real players, in real-time! One aspect that I'm very pleased with is the new competition screen. It's easy to see your club or nation fixture list but it's also a breeze to look up any league or club in the world.<br />

So what about the gameplay? As you may know already, I am switching back to a 2D match engine. There are no two ways about it, I just love 2D games and more importantly love coding in 2D. (Not to mention the fact that NSS3 outsold NSS4 by more than 2 times!) So I am improving the match engine from Sensational World Soccer and making sure that the enjoyment level is sky-high in every match. One of the best new features are match photographers and the TV camera men who track the ball as it moves around the pitch. Even better, if you score a goal you can celebrate in front of the cameras to improve your fame!<br />

The shop will of course return but one new addition to the range of items on offer are the 10 pairs of football boots. Each type of boot comes in a different colour and will offer specific boosts to either shooting, passing or tackling. The boots will wear out after 10 matches though, so you will need to regularly buy new pairs. That is of course until you get a boot sponsor - at which point you get your boots for free! <br />

As you can see from the screenshots, the interface is all new, with a shiny metallic style. Every button, list, and option can be selected with the keyboard, joypad or mouse I am very pleased with it so far. One thing I have focused on is making the game easier to navigate and reducing the complexity of the screens to a bare minimum. Other aspects, such as the gambling have been simplified in order to keep the game flowing and hopefully make it more fun.<br />

So that is a fairly brief synopsis of where the game is right now and perhaps the most exciting thing I can tell you is that I am LOVING playing it. The matches are always entertaining and I am astonished by some of the football that the AI is capable of. Every match throws up a surprise and you will see and score some stunning goals. (Oh, and you defenders will make some stunning tackles. :D)  There are still  more exciting features yet to be revealed and I have a lot to do but I expect by the end of February to be very close to finishing the game. As you can see, there is a story mode in which you need to win matches to unlock chapters. Each chapter sets the scene and then you have to play out the match as a single player on the pitch, either from the kick off or coming on as a substitute. <br />

You can actually create and save your own scenarios where you choose the teams, set the score, match minute and so on. This will allow you to re-create famous matches giving the player the chance to re-write the history books. How about England 3 West Germany 2 with just 19 minutes of extra time to play? I'm currently thinking of the best way to enable players to share their scenarios, either by cutting and pasting a code or by uploading to a New Star Games server.<br />

Of course, there is the usual Quick Match option, and I also hope to include a simple league campaign mode where you can control the team or play as a single player over the course of a season. <br />
<br />
All in all it plays a better game of football than Sensational World Soccer, especially now the keepers make more realistic saves. I'm very pleased with the camera zoom when playing as a single player as it smoothly pans out when the ball is far away letting you see everything going on. I have tweaked the AI, improved the tactical movement and made improvements across the board. In fact, there are so many unique incidents and goals in this game that I really feel that it is the best match engine I have made to date, and I will definitely keep enhancing it for New Star Soccer 5.<br />

The game is nearly complete and will be released soon. I'm not sure what to do regarding price yet - maybe a $4.99 bargain or something like that. Actually, I will be reviewing the prices of all my games soon. Anyway, keep an eye on the forum for a beta version soon!</blockquote>

First up, is an updated version of Super Laser Racer. This will feature new tracks, weapons and other stuff, but best of all... ONLINE MULTIPLAYER! Yes, 12 racers can fight it out against each other on any of the 24 tracks. You can even create your own tracks and share them online. The new version is currently in the last phases of testing so it should be up on Steam soon. This will most likely be a free update for existing customers, so hopefully the multiplayer option will get people playing again and help attract some new players towards the game.<br />

Also receiving the update treatment is New Star GP. It's a bit late in the season but all of the 2010 drivers, teams and tracks will be up to date along with a handful of fixes and enhancements. The online multiplayer mode is also getting a bit of an overhaul to sort out connection issues. Again, existing customers will get the update for free. I will send a mail out when it's ready to download so look out for that in a week or so!<br />

New Star Soccer</div><br />
It feels as though I have been banging my head against a brick wall with New Star Soccer for the past year or more. The game was ridiculously ambitious for a team that consisted of one programmer (me) and one database man (Nick Greig) and now that Nick has moved on it has become impossible to maintain. I do hope to release an update next month in order to fix a few remaining issues but I certainly feel that I need to start afresh and get NSS back to what it was... simple and entertaining football fun.<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">Retro Football!</div><br />
With that in mind, I'll let you in on a little side-project that I have been working on... Retro Football! This is a reworking of the Sensational Soccer engine which gives the game even more of an 8-bit feel. (Imagine a game that looks part Commodore 64, part SNES.) Initially it will just feature a Quick Match option and the Story Mode. The Story Mode is an idea that I have been thinking about for a while and have decided to include in this game to see what the reaction is like. Basically you have to complete a series of scenarios which start out with you making a second half debut for a team that must win the last game of the season to avoid relegation. Naturally, the team is already 2-0 down when you come on! As you progress through the chapters of the story you will of course end up playing in a World Cup Final. If the story mode is popular I may develop it further so that players can create their own scenarios and share them with friends. As this game is just a little experiment there is a good chance that it will be absolutely free. Just keep an eye on your inbox for further news. Here's a little glimpse of the game..<br />

				So what is this new football game that I hope to release before the worlds greatest players fly out to South Africa? It's only a flippin' World Cup themed, 2D, top-down, all new follow-up to the awesome Sensational Soccer, that's what! Yes, I'm going back to my roots with the sole aim of creating the best sprite-based football game ever made. Development has been very smooth so far with the match engine coming together at an alarming pace and is now approximately 80% complete. The main areas that still need work are the goalkeeping AI and the tournament system, but with 42 days until the show kicks off (and the tons of re-usable programming code from my previous footy games) I'm confident that it can be done. The game will be quite light in terms of features, but rest assured that there will be a full World Cup campaign mode, along with your basic 1 or 2 player quick matches. I'll hopefully have time to squeeze a tactics editor and a few other goodies in there before release, but the bite-sized nature of the game will be reflected in it's price (quite unlike the official FIFA World Cup game then!) <br />

What I can tell you is that I have decided to simplify the controls and in a throw-back to those classics of the 8-bit era, all actions will be performed with just one button. Now before you panic let me just say that the new system falls somewhere between Sensible Soccer and Sensational Soccer, and you can pretty much do all that you could in my previous football games only with a layer of complexity removed. In my opinion it gives the game a refreshing, instant appeal (and will be especially welcomed by keyboard players I'm sure.) Screenshots will be appearing via my blog and Twitter, but here's a small one to whet your appetite...<br />
