First of all I'd like to thank Si for this awesome little game. I've been a faithful NS Soccer user for 3 years, and now NSGP, for me, is the best Formula One game since F1GP/World Circuit on Amiga 500!
Anyway, one thing I love about the New Star kind of games, is the openness to customization and modification. For me, as a Brazilian, the 1991 F1 Season was unforgettable, with Ayrton Senna as World Champion for the third time, driving that classic Marlboro McLaren MP4/6 alongside Gerhard Berger, against the likes of Nigel Mansell and Ricardo Patrese on Williams, Prost and Alesi on Ferrari, Piquet and Schumacher on Bennetton. That's why I will start working on a F1 1991 Season mod.
Before I start, I'd like to ask a few questions to whom it may concern, and I apologize if they look dumb.
1 - Can I have more than one installation of the game, on the same computer? I'd like to be able to work on my MOD, and test it on real time, but I'd like to keep my 2009 Career intact, so I can come back to it and play anytime.
2 - What's the best software to edit the .db files of the game? I've tried a few Database editors, but the information loads up looking like broken code, and I can't edit anything. I'd like to know which software you guys are using to edit your .db files.
3 - Is there a way to edit the order the races happen? I want to edit the tracks and add some used in 1991 that are not part of the calendar anymore (Phoenix, USA for instance), so when you start the 1991 season, it will look like the 1991 Season, not 2009 with 91's teams and drivers.
Well, I appreciate any comments in advance, and I hope I can make a mod everyone can enjoy.
Thank you!

Hi cool pix good luck on your mod! Boa sorte ;)
I'll try to answer your questions:
1) You don't need more than one installation to do what you want. If you follow the instructions of the Creating a mod.txt on the installation folder, you'll see that you have to create a separate folder, so when you start the game you can choose the mod you want, or no mod at all, and still keep your saves and career intact ;)
2) Again the Creating Mods.txt already recommends: SQLiteBrowser, i used it in linux, but there's a windows version.
3) I believe so, again read that file!. I believe you have to put the new tracks in the media/tracks folder, you rename the files 1, 2, 3 (not really "1" "2".. it must be track1 or something, read the file :P) and so on, so the order you choose will be used. Also don't forget to rename the name of the tracks in the db!

Thanks a lot for your tips and the info, bazik, I will take a look at that! Hopefully I'll have a few screenshots to show in a few days.
Thanks again!

You'll obviously have one slight issue. 1991 had 35 regular cars over 19 teams, you'll have to pick the major ones. Shouldn't affect things too badly.

Well he'll just take the top 10 then :) Lola and Leyton House scored 3 points for 11th and 12th respectively, and all others are a big zero :)

Yes, that was the first thing I've realized was that I could only fit 10 teams on the Grid, but since that season had a bunch of small teams, It was not a problem to picj the ones that would be in and the ones that would be out. Anyway, I picked the following teams to be in:
- McLaren
- Williams
- Ferrari
- Lotus
- Benetton
- Brabham
- Tyrrell
- Jordan
- Leyton House
- Minardi
Now, I have all cars done, only thing missing is the helmets for the drivers, because I'd like to have the real color on each driver, so I'll need to research further on the helmet colors.
On the database, the driver names and the team names with the correct car numbers are done as well, but none of the specs and statistics for each driver and team is correct. It's still the original specs of the original game, so I also need to do some research in order to do it right.
Still a lot of work to do, did not touched the tracks yet, and none of the in game screens and teams logos.
The way it is, I'd say this mod is 5% complete.
Well, take a look at some images from the mod right now, you can see how the cars are coming out. Please leave your comments and suggestions.

Here you can see a Jordan, Two Minardis, a Leyton House followed by a McLaren, a Ferrari, Williams, Lotus and Benetton.

Same cars, but please note a Tyrrell between the Minardis and the Leyton House car. I think this Tyrrel is too dark, and the car became black.

Just a comment on the images:
your Tyrrell needs a white 'nose'
what's with Williams? The yellow transforms to red on my screen :)
P.S. Surely you know the drivers' helmet colours? Microprose F1GP was based around that year.

you did a fine job.
good luck doing the helmets, i think you can change that really easily and you will get a superb mod.
the rest, specially the tracks, will be a lot of work, yes, good luck!

if you tell me the teams you are going to include i can try to find more images to help you.
Here is the Minardis M191, i think you have too much orange there, get the right color from these pics:

Guys, thanks a lot for those images. I will fix the colors on those cars. Being a 36x36 pixel, sometimes the colors get a bit confusing, but I can pull it off.
Thanks again and keep 'em coming!

Thanks again and keep 'em coming!
Sure, tell me which 10 teams you are using, i'll search nice pics.
btw, here is a tip, sometimes to get just the right color, i would use that "color picker tool" on a nice spot of the color i wanted from the car picture.

Indeed, there are color pickers that can pick an average from a multitude of pixels, very useful!
