Northern Ireland 1 - 0 England
Do we really need to comment on this one? The scoreline and opposition speak for themselves about Sven's current tactics and attitude...

Don't worry.England have strong team and this is just one suprise.
I think that in final of WC 2006 will be England and Brasil.

nah dont belive we play the right tactics we should have Martin O'Neil as manager
every thing he touches turns to gold
Celtic
Leicester
Wycombe(a bit)
he has passion whih is what we need
i would aslo like to see Stuart Pearce in charge soon to
think erikkson should go i think that hes starting to lose the luck that i belive he has had riding for him in the past
many occasions england could have been beaten in qualifiers but they seemed to win any way #-o
belive erikkson should of gone a few yaers ago
but i still am greatfull =D> and think that we needed sven about 3 years ago but think that times move on and no manager stays at a club forever.
I agree, Sven doesn't seem to have a handle on how to utilise the players at his disposal any more. The FA will let him ride out qualification but I'd stake my bike on him leaving after the World Cup regardless of how well we do.
Of course, if we don't qualify, that's a different story...

yerh lots of people i know want him out but if he goes now then the next manager will be expected to do brilliant and win the world cup
think that we might aswell keep with sven till after the world cup as the next man will be under way to much pressure then
but if we give the next manger two years till the next major championship

Granted, poor game, dont over react. Thats the first qualifying game he has ever lost.
Yes, it was Northern Ireland Nil, and yes we should have hammered them, but this isnt the first upset in the history of football, nor the biggest.
Sven will definately not be sacked, a new manager now would be the most stupid thing ever. He will however definately not be here at the end of the world cup, as I dont think he will stay on in honesty. I am seriously considering the fact that I think Sven has taken England as far as he can, and to move on to another level will take a different man for the job.
Who that man is, i think the names that are being banded around in previous posts are fantasy right now. You don't have to think who you would want as England manager, but who would want to be England manager, and who is available. Just because someone is succesful at club level, does not mean they would be a successful International manager, take Graham Taylor for example. I would love Stuart Pearce to be England manager, someday. But not yet, he has to prove himself for more than the next few years at club level.
And we will qualify. This will be a massive kick up the arse for England, who I think will pull their finger out with their tactics and their performance. We win out next two games, we are qualifying for the WC, as top of the group.

:P USA :P
First time they've been the first CONCACAF team to qualify since 1934...
CONCACAF only deserve 1 and a half spots instead of the 3 and a half they get. Mexico are the top team in CONCACAF and USA are 2nd. Everyone else is rubbish.

But what would be the point of having qualifiers in that case? Its like saying lets just have celtic and rangers play in the scottish league because they're going to finish first and second anyway...

Think that noone other then the papers are overeacting we have never actually dominated a qualifiying match for a long time think he was running on luck for a long time was pleasd with three points against wales but we played poor same with the wales game at hom and the azerbijan match and austria matches.
Think that most managers who are good at club level would be pretty good at international level
i would like stuart pearce to manager in about 4 or 5 years maybe assistant manager now to gain experience from Martin O'neil

yeah i agree
it wouldn't be fair it gives the other teams something else to aim for
its like people said the same thing about the premiership about two years ago to me saying that liverpool newcastle were not good enough for the champions league any way so why dont we just have three automatic qualifiyers
but now liverpool finished four and they win the champions league

Thats the reason i quoted DS instead of you - i wasnt debating who was best, i was just saying that there'd be no real point to having qualification if only the best two teams are going to stand ANY chance of going through...

Maybe they should scrap regional qualifying altogether and make the qualifying groups out of one or two nations from each continent. You could have twenty-four groups with the top team in each group automatically qualifying, alongside the best second-placed side and the twelve next-best second-placed teams going into a playoff to fill in the last remaining gap.
The downsides are, of course, that with about 204 teams and 24 groups, it means that the groups will have about eight or nine sides in them. Also, the poorer nations might have trouble getting the funds to travel half-way accross the world. Nevertheless, it'd be cool to see a group consisting of, say, Colombia, Ghana, Mali, Scotland, Estonia, St. Lucia, Fiji and Iran. It could also make for some real groups of death, i.e. England, Argentina, Nigeria, Australia, South Korea, South Africa, Finland, El Salvador and the United States could find themselves in the same group if there was a limit on the amount of sides from one continent that could be put in the same group, and the higher-seeded sides from each continent found themselves together!
Good concept, but the mixed of federations is never going to happen due to the travel costs as you mentioned.

Indeed, the travel costs are far too big a hindrance.
Not only that, I think it would devalue the World Cup somewhat. Part of the experience is having 32 teams from around the world, rather than simply having the best 32 sides full stop which your system would lead to.
I don't know about you lot, but I'm looking forward to one of Uzbekistan, Bahrain, Guatemala or Trinidad & Tobago playing in the World Cup for the first time next year.

CONCACAF Have way too many spots - taking up one that Oceania should have gotten, yes I am still bitter.
It's about Revenge this time Uruguay!

Costa Rica > Australia, Costa Rica are 3rd in CONCACAF and deserve their spot, Australia is moving to the Asian confederation in 2006 and we'll see how they do there.
Mexico and the USA are pretty much even, USA has had the better of them of late but Mexico is defenitely the better country in terms of players. Trinidad and Bahrain will be cool though :)

By the way if the USA gels at the right time they have a shot of winning. Not much of a chance but if Senegal beats Sweden, or if we get a good call in the Germany match, we'd be in the Semis and probably though to the Finals. USA 2006!
