This was an idea posted on another freeware forum about the possibility of this kinda game happening, and i loved the ideas the person put forward...

You have just won 10 Million on the lottery

You are wondering what you can do with all your spare time. You have a love of football but don't support any team. You decide to form your own club, You buy some land and you build a 5,000 capacity stadium with 400 seats all for £1.5M

start from the Amatuer League, you hire a manager, physio & groundsman.

You then set a budget for the manager(which would be very minimal at the start)

You try and get people to go to your matches.

You negotiate with Sponsors and advertisers(eg Advetising boards, Shirt sponsors, Team sponsors etc)

Every season you assess how the team has gone and how your manager is doing. You will also know the feelings of your supporters.

In years to come you will have other options open to you eg Floating your club on the stock exchange etc

Possibilitys of bringing in new, young and exciting players who can make it big within the football world.

Any ideas about this kinda game perhaps being made somewhere?

Went onto his site today, after I saw the link, says there should be something from him by late May. Unless its on his site and I didnt find it, perhaps he is running behind? I hope I am missing a released demo, as I'd greatly enjoy playing the game personally.

Hey!

I haven't worked on the game in awhile but I'm going to continue soon.

Should have a playable demo out soon.

John

PS Could you post a link to the forum?

Maybe I could give it a go, and do some simple stuff, at least after I master Java :P

Hi...

I found this thread via google when looking for football chairman and thought i'd drop in and let you know what i'm doing.

For the last 2/3 weeks i've been writing exactly this kind of thing, as a web based game. Some of the detail in the initial post here is quite close to what i've already done...

I'll run through the basic, concept and would love feedback on the idea, and in the not to distant future people to help me test the first working version.

Basically you sign up, create your club, the name, location, colours, kit etc, you get a ground and training ground and have to employ players and staff. Each team starting out gets the same standard facilities and can employ the same standard staff / players as every other new player, there is a player select process at the start which randomises the contract lengths on your players/staff and allows you to pick names you think are cool :)

Currently new teams join a league of 20, at the end of the season you go and join another league and so on. After playing a while you find yourself a big club in a league of smaller new players. As time goes on levels will be added so bigger clubs can enter into league against each other. Eventualy and when the user levels permit i'd like a massive Football League type structure, with new players starting at the bottom, cup competitions, european style competitions for the best clubs etc...

A league runs over 40 days, there are 38 gamedays where your club plays a fixture, this is basically so there is involement and something to check / tinker with each day. Game are played everyday so seasons don't go on for ages and clubs progress fairly quickly...

Each day you can pay towards upgrading your training facilities and ground facilites, and can also pay for capacity upgrades to your ground every 3 days in blocks of 500 seats. Obvously these come at a cost, but the size / quality of someones club will have some influance towards results etc.

At the start of a season you set your season ticket price, then based on the price your club size, last years performance etc the tickets are sold and you get the revenue into your club account. Each day / gameday you can tinker with your ticket price, put it up for big games where you might get a bigger crowd or reduce it to pack the ground and spur the team on. The size of the crowd will depnd on the facilities, club reputation and obviously price of ticket...

You can sack staff, employ new ones...Set contract lenghts, pay signings on fees and compensation to the manager you sack every 2 months :) Release players, sign new players, sell players back to the transfer market. Each league has its own mini transfer market at the moment, although long term this would be one big transfer market / staff market where club size / reputation would influance the quality of player or staff you can attract.

There is a media centre where as the chairman you are contacted by the press, your responses earn you reputation points but not if you make a fool of yourself.

The finances of the club would have to be monitored and thought about, obviously you're playing wages and costs on things, and only making money from gate receipts and a few pre season activities such as Season Tickets and Sponsors. Clubs that end up skint will go into administration, loose points and reputation, if you can't turn it round you could loose your club, no matter how big!

A lot of the above is done, some is not done yet... I'm about 2/3 weeks away from a fully playable working version, but thats without the graphics etc to make it a nice looking game to play. I'd welcome any help on this from anyone who is really keen to get involved and has either graphical or development skills.

So... what do you think?

Thanks

Jamie

It has potential. I couldn't get the gameplay balance right with my version of Chairman, but perhaps I'll try it again :)

what to you mean by gameplay balance exactly?

There was way too much emphasis on the results in my game and not enough on the manager, for instance. None of the parts flowed together.

Interesting you posted that, a lot of people have asked me about Football Chairman and I've been considering making a very basic FC-style game for awhile. Think a glorified spreadsheet, but still. I have a lot of well-programmed code left over from NSH (which is not dead, but I'm busy and have no desire to rewrite the match engine right now, which is what it needs), so it could be pretty easy to do.

But don't quote me on that yet.

I would prefer a proper game to some web based game so I hope you do make it statto.

I agree a proper game would be great, but sadly i don't have the tallents of EA up my sleeve lol...

My attempt will be along shortly for people to have a blast at and tell me what they think... The main structure is about there and it will work fairly well as a web game where your main aim is to build a big club. But i agree doing the game engine is tricky, although as with any chairman the result and team performance is out of your hands, i want it to be as realistic as possible at creating results but with a fair bit of chance thrown in too where games are concerned.

If anyones got anymore ideas of the kind of features you'd like to see i'll see what i can do...

We should at least give him our support until we've tried it, rather than asking statto to make it right in front of him. We ought to encourage developers - and does format really matter as long as it's a fun game to play?

Good luck FootballChairman, can't wait to play it. :)

I was just making a comment that I usually dont like browser based games and as I said "I dont know about this" which means I dont known yet because I haven't tried it. It was just a comment and not a judgement on the game since it would be impossible for me to make one since I hadn't tried it. Once it is done I will surely try it so I hope he does finish developing it soon so we can have a go.

We ought to encourage developers
Wasnt I doing that with statto, encouraging developers? I remember his football chairman from a few years ago it was being developed and it appeared promising from the screenshots and things I saw and I was eagerly anticipating its release until statto lost the files or something. I remember once statto wrote about playing/testing it for a whole day because he hadn't implemented save games yet lol .
