View Full Version : Online Management Game - CPL

I have found an Online Management Game, I have been in plenty before but this one seems better than the likes of Sunday League and FootieManager. It uses real players, real teams...etc.

it's in it's second season, I think. I have recently joined(Yesterday). I am Norwich and I am 9th in the second division, which is the relegation zone as it's a ten team league.

Anyway here's the link...
http://www.thecpl.org.uk/

To manage a team, you'll need to first register on the site, register on the forums and then apply for a vacancy on the forums.

Best of all...it's free!

I see Nando(Fernandez) has joined as well. Nando, if you have any questions on what to do, just ask me  .

After starting out with both Hattrick and Dugout-online a few weeks ago, I've made my decision.

Quick result:
Dugout-online beats Hattrick 6-2.Full match report (a comparison and review of Hattrick and Dugout-online):

There's no way I have enough time to devote to both, so I decided early on that it was going to be one or the other. I had a good first impression of Hattrick - the site design was clean and minimal, the text was well written and the navigation seemed clear and sensible. And it has a huge number of players. Tens of thousands online simultaneously. It must be good to have that kind of support.

Dugout-online seemed a bit heavier in its site design, using Flash more and with perhaps more dated graphics. The introductory text is pretty minimal. The number of players is far lower. Overall, I was getting a considerably more impressive show from Hattrick.

Then, Hattrick told me to wait until a league spot became available. OK, I thought, with this level of activity that's going to be a few minutes. But no... eventually I was told it would take 1-2 days. And in the end it took 4 days. I got annoyed. You can't do anything while you're waiting. You have no players. You just sit around and wait.

Finally I was given a spot, and could check out the team, the league, how stuff works. I was very unimpressed to discover that the league into which I had been placed consisted of 7 robot teams and mine. Why the bzzzzzt did I wait for 4 days then?

In Dugout-online I also waited a few days to be placed in a league (I think it was 3 days or so) but it wasn't frustrating, because there was a lot I could do - I had a team of players, and I could bid for coaches, train players, set tactics, schedule friendlies, pretty much everything except have a league match in the calendar.

This is getting overlong. OK, here's a quick summary of the pluses and minuses.

Number of players
I realised that this is actually a big plus for Dugout-online. In Australia there are only about 35 players, it seems. Two league levels, with relegation and promotion. The kind of number that works for me, where you can get to know the other managers, where you have a decent chance of getting to the top. There are more than 10,000 players in the equivalent six-level league structure ("Oceania") in Hattrick. That's a giant machine to me, where you're just anonymous.
GOAL for Dugout-online

Live match reports
Both have them, of course. Dugout-online's are more detailed and more interestingly written, and better visually presented. Downside for me: the matches are all at a fixed time of day, which is 3am here, whereas Hattrick has games at a friendlier local time. But it still doesn't make up for it, because the match report is what you refer to afterwards anyway.
GOAL for Dugout-online

Third-party applications
Hattrick has set up a nice system which supports a lot of downloadable applications (and browser plugins) written by third parties - people and companies that aren't Hattrick. These programs can help a lot with analysing stats of players and matches. Dugout-online doesn't have any support for third-party applications yet.
GOAL for Hattrick

Setting up the club
Dugout-online does this so much better. In Hattrick you get no choice of kit at all (until you pay money to be a "Hattrick Supporter"). And even then the images are tiny little stick-men. In Dugout-online, you get a Flash-based kit designer and stadium setup tool. Very smooth and enjoyable.
GOAL for Dugout-online

Learning the ropes
Dugout-online doesn't give you much in the way of help. There are a series of FAQ pages (which are brief but good), but a lot left unclear. You really have to use the forums to learn how some of it works. Hattrick, on the other hand, has a nice feature called the "Manager Licence Challenge". You start with a small amount of money, and go through a series of challenges - I think 24 in all. Each time you finish a challenge you get a bag of money, ending up with many times what you started with. The challenges are designed to help you learn where things are on the site and how to do the main actions in managing the club. It's a good idea, and quite well implemented.
GOAL for Hattrick

Community forums
Overall I found the Hattrick forums confusing, complex and very strangely organised - very off-putting. The Dugout-online forums are much nicer to use, well organised, and clear. It's friendly and the admins and main coders reply frequently. Almost like NSS!
GOAL for Dugout-online

Management features
Again, I was surprised to find Hattrick coming up short here. Dugout-online has quite a bit more depth to it. For a start, you have an entire youth squad, which you manage just like the first team, preparing tactics, sub timings, penalty taker, etc etc, and there is a complete parallel youth league. Training is much better done - the coaches have detailed attributes (almost like players) and you can assign each player to a specific coach, and have each coach work on specific abilities. And the players themselves are described in much more detail... in Hattrick you get 8 or 10 attributes, each of which is a rather mysterious word like 'poor' or 'inadequate' (you have to keep on looking up what number each word means). In Dugout-online there are 21 attributes, each of which are numbers between 0 and 50. To me, that gives it much more depth and interest. There are many options for facilities (stadium seating, pitch surface, media centre, training ground, etc etc) which just aren't there in HT. Tactics are much more sophisticated in Dugout-online: you can play around with passing style, aggression, mentality, attacking wing, whether to run an offside trap or counter-attacks, and can nominate not just captain, playmaker, target man and penalty taker, but also specify substitutions for various conditions (like 'if we are losing by one after 65 minutes, sub off this defensive midfielder for this striker'). Basically, Dugout-online is way ahead of Hattrick on the core features. I couldn't find a single aspect where Hattrick was better.
GOAL for Dugout-online

And, to seal the match...

Match-simulation code engine
This is crucial to any football-management game - well, any football game at all, I guess. The code has to produce results that simulate as well as possible a real game, with all its complexities. I have to say that this one really shocked me. Hattrick, with its zogzillions of users, would surely have a sleek, highly detailed and realistic match engine. Well, I took a look at the Hattrick World Cup semi-final match between Oceania and Germany, played a couple of days ago. This, I remind you, is the World Cup semi-final, played between the top national teams of a pool of hundreds of thousands of players. Get this: ball possession was "98% Germany, 2% Oceania".
GOAL for Dugout-online

I'm now happy to say I've ditched Hattrick.

adam_the_scouser
08-14-2006, 09:45 AM
Well if they delete your account for no reason don't come crying back to hattrick. I was impressed with dugout too but they just dropped my account for no reason and I couldn't be bothered emailing them. No wonder they don't have half as many players if they are deleting peoples accounts unexplicably. An email saying why would have been nice. I am still going strong in hattrick by the way. It rules!!!!

nobody plays DO :) that's funny.

Clearly you had something screw up with your account access on DO somehow, and you're bearing a grudge as a result. But... you didn't even ask the admins about it? If you go onto the DO forum and PM an admin called 'spot', apparently he's the one to ask about account/login probs.

Personally I reckon you'll find DO more enjoyable in the long run. I found Hattrick pretty boring, to be honest.

adam_the_scouser
08-15-2006, 01:48 PM
I didn't find there was anything to do in DO. Pick a kit and the colour of your stadium while you wait for a league???? That is just virtual doll dressing to me.
I didn't bother emailing them, no thats true, but then my time had been wasted and I had already gone over to hattrick and found lots of fun there. Did you completed the challenges that earn you money? Hattrick's engine for the amount of players and games it has to process is fine. Unfortunately I never got to experience DO's engine and never will.

Dugout-online has only been running since December, I joined in January and so far there are 5440 registered managers which is nothing compared to the amount that hattrick has.

Another thing is that the DO admins are always striving to make the game better, 2 new features have been made available in the last 24 hours(Scouting option and ticket price manager). I heard that hat-trick have stopped developing their game - so DO scores again.

Hattrick is unrealistic because teams don't get money in real-life when their managers gets his coaching badge(challenges).

Like I said earlier, someone on your work's network must have had a Dugout-online account. This person doesn't have to be in the same building, perhaps your work shares the network with another business.

Hattrick is unrealistic because teams don't get money in real-life when their managers gets his coaching badge(challenges). Yep, the speed of development is definitely a big plus for DO. In 9 months they've gone far, far beyond what Hattrick have done in - what, 6 years?

However, I don't think Hattrick have actually stopped development. They released a couple of minor new features when I was playing a few weeks ago.

Personally I don't have a problem with the Manager Challenge (getting money for learning) thing. It's artificial, sure, but it's only short term - for the first few weeks while you find your way around. I think DO could benefit from something like that to help newcomers learn the system.

Maybe it could be thought of as the club's board releasing money to you once you prove your abilities... or something :)

The idea behind my kit was to dazzle the opposition and confuse them with all the colours. Unfortunately it seems to work against us having been beaten in the cup 3-0 beaten in the league 2-0 and winning one league game 1-0.

Might I add that I have had no control over my team cos I thought my account had been deleted. I am proud to say I am back in charge of Bootle FC and I couldn't sign any coaches or physios yesterday. I had two good wins at the weekend with us beating Medchester United 5-0 away from home and winning 3-0 against FC aeslehc in the national youth cup semi-final.

I've made two new signings as well - 21 year old centre-back Jesse Paananen on a free transfer and 28 year old striker Maximilian Upton(backup for the first team) for 4k.

Scousers seen roaming the streets!

Reports are coming in that a group of suspicious Scousers have been seen wandering the streets near Banambila Stadium, possibly asking locals where they can find "a bevvy". Since most of the locals have been unable to understand a single word they say, the visitors have not had much success.

Bizarre rumours are spreading that the Scousers may in fact be a football team, by the name of Bootle FC, due to play a friendly with Banambila's second team this coming Monday 28 August.

Well played, Bootle FC! Tailor's goal in the 79th sealed it.

Hope you enjoyed your trip to Australia!

(btw next time I'd suggest not playing your first team for a friendly... reduces their condition and risks injury... give the others a go!)

Well played Forza your second string held my team back. 3 wins out of 4 since I took charge proper. I played my first team cos I am still getting to grips with everything. I wanna know my weak spots.

In the future I will give others a run out but going all that way to Oz I had to give the banambilla crowd something to watch and to the faithful travelling scousers :)

Thanks for the warm welcome the fantastic weather and the game :)

I thought we were going to be boring boring Bootle cos we were winning 1-0 all the time. We had recently played in Australia against Forza's team and the fitness levels were a bit unsteady. I went against the grain of having an all English squad and bought an American centre back as my best defender is still injured (been out for 2 weeks and still has another 8 weeks to go jeez). My captain was tired after the trip to Oz so I had plans to bring on my tank of a yank at the back.

Also I had plans to take off my right winger for a left footed winger and my two goalscoring forwards were tired an all.

I thought the game had 0-0 written all over it. This team had only conceeded 4 goals previous. Imagine my surprise when I check the score out and it says whoever 0 Bootle FC 5. GET IN!!! Tailor who you all know and love scored 2 along with his strike partner Lawson. And Sackville got in on the action even though he was knackered from the Oz experience. I don't regret my game against Banambilla now as every game is making my squad stronger and my tactics are getting better.

I am now just two points off the top and the team at the top was my first game in charge and we lost 1-0. Ok maybe I am getting carried away so early in the season but the fact that my team was floating around forever without coaches or physios or me at the helm. We now have lost of sponsorship money coming in 2 coaches and a physio. I upgraded the pitch at the start of the season and I am thinking of doing it again and for 2 weeks now the stands are getting upgraded so i will have the biggest ground in the league. Bootle FC will soon be in Europe :)

There is one premiership team available in the CPL and that's WBA, if anyone is interested. If not, then there are a good few championship sides available.

So far, it's going great - plenty of banter. First matches of the season start on saturday.

Yeah, you didn't get it though as another guy with a lot of experience in esms applied for the same job. The WBA job is still going though.

Liverpool played on the sunday and won 1-0 against Fulham and Manchester City beat Middlesbourgh 4-3, I forgot to add them in.

Damn him. I can't even get the wrexham job lol. Oh well I will take another look tonight. Do I have to start a thread with WBA and say I want that job?

By the way Forza tonight mate Jamie Richardson gets his debut for Bootle FC. You might wanna check my result and see how he does. i am playing a team that is unbeaten and hasn't conceeded a goal. So I am hoping Richardson's Ozzy Wizadry does the biz!!!

Ok done it. Job better be mine!!! :)

Anyway in my DO experience I have won again!!!! 1-0 in the cup. the team that hasn't conceeded a goal conceeded one to everybodys fave player Porter Tailor and went out. Now I am playing a team in the league that is right behind me in 4th place. I checked his players he has quite a few good players in his team but I am confident my boys will come through and maybe go top of the league!!!

My centre back has got MOM 5 times in his last 5 games so I am quite solid in defence. And the men from Oz are coming to sunny Bootle for friendly number 2 towards the end of the month where I promise Forza I will play a weakened team to give my other players a run out and try new tactics. And hopefully his old player Richardson will bang in a hat trick :)

I am reading tons of rules but nothing on how to run the club. Could you give me a link to where I need to go. I have spent a total of an hour trying to find something to help new managers and explain how to do training, team sheets etc etc. I am stuck big time!!!!
