Incredible.
I was checking the BBC website for updated Rushden news at home midday today, having completely forgotten about the Champions League final (amazingly).
BBC shows AC Milan 3-0 Liverpool Live, so I click the link to see how much time is left, and it pops up: AC Milan 3-1 Liverpool, 53rd minute. I race into the TV room, pop on ESPN2 (this is America, this isn't on a major network), it's AC Milan 3-2 Liverpool, Gerrard down in the box.
Needless to say I didn't go straight back out as I was planning... I'm not a big Liverpool fan (one of my more favorite teams but I don't really care) but the match was incredible.
Unfortunately I think that AC Milan should have still ended up winning it in the end as I do not believe that penalties are a good way to decide the match.
It's late in the season - and I wouldn't do this for every match - but for finals, play golden goal until somebody lets in a goal. Give the teams an extra substitution and play in 15-minute intervals with two four-minute breaks, and if the game goes past 3 extra times, move it to eight-minute breaks and maybe add another substitution in there for some fresh legs.
Disagree if you must but I'm basing this somewhat off of NHL Stanley Cup Playoff overtimes, where you play on until someone scores. Bodies are tired. Exhaustion is motivation enough to end the game as soon as possible. And with exhaustion comes errors, mental and physical, one of which will be fatal enough to terminate the game. Maybe somebody should try to simulate these effects.
