Terry claims player of year award
Chelsea's John Terry has won the 2005 Professional Footballers' Association (PFA) Player of the Year Award. The defender beat off competition from team-mates Frank Lampard and Petr Cech, 2004 winner Thierry Henry, Steven Gerrard and Andrew Johnson. The PFA Young Player Award went to 19-year-old Manchester United and England striker Wayne Rooney. Shaka Hislop received the Special Merit Award, after his involvement with the "Show Racism The Red Card" campaign.
Terry, the first Chelsea player to receive the award, said he was amazed to have been voted the best player of the year by his peers. "It is unbelievable and the ultimate accolade to be voted for by your fellow professionals whom you play against week-in and week-out," said Terry. "You just go out there and try to give it your best, and for them to show their appreciation and vote for me is fantastic.
"For Petr, Lamps and myself to be voted in, it was important that one of us won it. "It has been a real special season with Chelsea and this just adds to it. "I want to thank all of my team-mates, because without them this would not have happened. "It is my first year as captain and they have helped me a lot, on and off the pitch." Terry is the first defender to win the award since Paul McGrath in 1993 and the first Englishman to do so since Teddy Sheringham in 2001. England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson paid a glowing tribute to both Terry and Lampard. "They are great players who could play in any team in the world," he said. The awards were hugely successful for Terry's Chelsea team, which supplies four of the Premier League's Team of the Year.
He is joined in the side by goalkeeper Cech, midfielder Lampard and winger Arjen Robben. Terry's England central defensive partner Rio Ferdinand, of Manchester United, is also included, alongside Old Trafford team-mate Gary Neville. Arsenal full-back Ashley Cole completes the team's defence. Liverpool captain Gerrard and Manchester City winger Shaun Wright-Phillips complete the midfield alongside Lampard and Robben. The two-man strike force is made up of 2004 PFA winner Henry of Arsenal and Crystal Palace forward Johnson. Meanwhile, Celtic striker John Hartson and Rangers midfielder Fernando Ricksen were voted joint winners of the Scottish PFA's player of the year award.
Just thought that there was a big contest between lampard and terry and it deseved a thread

For me it still goes to Terry, you can replace Lampard if you have to due to suspension with another equally good player, the amount of good midfielders Chelsea have is scary, but you cant see Chelsea being the same team if John Terry is there, it would be a far more suspect back line. To me, Chelsea can just about cope without Lampard if need be, but they cant cope without Terry.

to me they are equaly indispensable because although i agree that terry cannot be replaced, neither can frank lampard as each chealsea midfielder has a different role:
4 Claude Makelele - the original unsung hero anchorman
5 Alexei Smertin - anchorman
8 Frank Lampard - in the hole
10 Joe Cole - winger-turned attacking midfielder
11 Damien Duff - left winger turned right winger
14 Njitap Geremi - right midfielder
19 Scott Parker - bench-sitter
30 Cardoso Tiago - token portu-geezer
36 Jo Keenan - unknown
42 Anthony Grant - unknown
16 Arjen Robben - left- winger

now ive seen tiago name (the chelsea one)what do u think about him?
he used to play for my favorite team and he was one of the stars.then mourinho when has gone to chelsea took him with him although he wasnt from his team...
Tiago has looked nothing but average, all be it consistent, in what I've seen of him.
Oh, and yes... I predictably voted for Thierry Henry, if only because he has again shown himself to be the most skilled and talented player from the list. :D

as far as this issue goes i agree with 3 things:
1.thierry henry isn't as good as some others
2. jamie carragher has been rock solid and probably if he was 5 years younger then he would definately be playing for england
3. Tiago is ******* ****, putting it nicely
Thierry 'not as good as some others'? He's the best striker out the lot obviously  I think people have just become so used to him performing at his level, that it becomes taken for granted.
Full marks to Terry and Lampard though, they've both had great seasons.

OK, Gerrard, Terry, Lampard, Cech, etc... have a great season, but I think that they are no match to Henry, that has been outstanding so far this year.

i disagree..........henry is usually an outstanding player but this season certainly wasn't as good as last and he hasn't been recieving the superlatives he did last year either, however, he is top scorer, which is a suprise to me as he really hasn't seemed anywhere near player of the year.
Now this poses the question, is english football so much better than last season, or are arsenal just not as flashy, adopting a more "simple but effective" approach...............i think not, but that is what it seems like on paper
it may be a bit of both... the fact that Arsenal, and Henry, haven't matched last seasons superlative laden quality; but at the same time, because that season was of such a high standard, they set the bar that much higher for themselves.
Ask yourself this: If Thierry Henry had done this season what he'd done for Arsenal for any other team, including your own... would you view change?

henry is easily the best striker but not the best player this season i think that he would be fourth for me behind lampard, carragher, terry.
yes henry has played wel and pretty consistent to but not quite as well and not quite as consistent as a few others.
im not saying he hasn't played well he has played brilliant but other players have played a little bit better then him this season

I voted Gerrard cos he has carried the Liverpool team again. But if Carragher was in there I would have voted for him. Over 400 games. Solid as a rock
Err.. this is last seasons... locked :)
