Okay peeps... I thought it would be nice to have a small part of the lounge to discuss our big screen favourites.
I'll get the ball rolling... last film I saw was 'The Hitchikers Guide to The Galaxy'. I never saw the tv series or read the book, but had a rough idea what it was all about. Must say, thoroughly enjoyed it, very funny and off the wall.
Favourite film of all time is a toss-up between Braveheart and The Matrix. I think the repressed Scot in me loves Braveheart for it's ideals, but the Matrix was such an overall experience (the cinema I saw it in was near enough trashed that night).
Worst film I've ever seen? I don't tend to watch a film for more than 20 minutes if it's going to be a duffer, so i'll have to get back on that one.

My Fav film ever is the original Blues Brothers film, with Belushi and Ackroyd, when Dan Ackroyd was actually thin. Its the only musical I can bear to sit and watch due to the fact the music doesnt actually suck, and the car chases (crashes) are simply amazing. Plus there is a part where a very young Steven Spielberg is in it :D
My other Fav film is Jay and Silent Bob Strike back, written and starring Kevin Smith, because its just so funny, and is exactly my humour. I plan to watch his other films, Chasing Amy and Clerks and so on, very soon, well as soon as I can get my hands on them from somewhere.
aahh.. the original Blues Brothers. Tis amazing indeed, though weirdly I never thought of it as a musical film until you mentioned it! The bit with the nun still creases me up!

Another Film fact : Despite the fact "The Shawshank Redemption" is many peoples favourite film of all time, if not loved by all, it has still to this day not made the amount of money it cost to make. Apparently it cost around $13 million to make, and then totally bombed at the pictures, and has only got to around $11.5 million in revenue mainly from video and DVD sales.

i do like the matrix but not sure bout it being my favourite
Just got back from seeing 'XXX2: The Next Level'... must admit I'm not the biggest fan of this sort of film usually, but as with the first one, I found it to be a thoroughly enjoyable slice of cheesey action :D
Great scene towards the end involving a nifty silver number and no leaves on the track  and one or two chuckles along the way. Ice Cube was unexpectedly pretty cool as well.
Come on guys, there's more to life than NSS and football!!
Kingdom of Heaven today... seems to meander in places, and you may struggle to stick with it if you don't know your history, but maybe worth seeing for the battle sequences alone.
I'm pleased I finally saw one of these 'epics' as I missed Troy and King Arthur. :)

On the subject of worse film ever, i totally forgot about "When Saturday Comes" staring Sean Bean, until it was screen late last night on BBC 1.
It is a woeful waste of time for a number of reasons, not all plot related. It does however have a decent cast, with some very talented British actors, just a shame they dont have a script to act with.
Sean Bean plays some pub footballer, ale drinker, jack the lad, who comes from a shoddy family, but plays football and works in a factory (how typical, wait, it gets better) He supports his beloved sheffield United (who he is actually on the board of directors for in real life). Then he gets a trial for a better team, Hallam FC, a step up from his pub team, he continues to get better, stars seeing some lass from his factory, and all that.
He then gets a trial for united, all within the space of about a month (because that happens in real life) He does well in the trial, and despite his home life, he is doing well. He then has one more trial in front of the united boss before they take him on. The night before this trial, he gets wrecked, and sleeps with a stripper (told you it gets better, but wait). His dad then sells his brothers prized collection of football programmes for cash to go to the bookies, his brother then dies, and his girlfriend leaves him for sleeping with the stripper. United dump him because he was awful in the trial, as he was hungover. This is in the space of like 3 days. So then he tries to kill himself, and doesnt.
So then he decides to be a "changed man" and goes into training, Rocky style, and goes for runs at like 3Am around Sheffield. Bean cleans up his act and vows to get his girlfriend back. He does, and ends up playing for united within like 2 weeks, and then scores a goal and the winning pen to beat Man united, at Bramall Lane, in the FA cup. Then it goes off, and we all cheer. (well what a suprise, never saw that ending coming)
god, i hate United, and this Film, and I do like Sean Bean, just this one film needs erasing for ever, as its garbage

 lol i know
right from the start of the film i knew it would be crap
Lapsed a bit here, so a brief count of recent viewings...
Star Wars III - A fitting end to the 'before' story, ties things up quite nicely. Great effects as expected, but they didn't overshadow the storyline as far as I'm concerned. Roll on the complete box set! *****
Mr & Mrs Smith - Angelina's in it.. it's a classic obviously :P Kidding aside, it's a pretty far fetched yarn but it just about keeps the action or gags coming enough to keep your attention. ***
Batman Begins - This makes up for the poor showing of the last couple of Batman films. Christian Bale played the role well, and it's interesting to see Hollywoods's depiction of how he became 'trained' etc. The 'continutity' error between this and the original Batman movie gripes me though... ****
Kung Fu Hustle - Yes, the girlfriend was not impressed from the moment she realised it was subtitled, so naturally, I loved it. Funny throughout, visually alluring, I'd love to see western filmakers take things a 'little less seriously' like Chow does, as the end result can be an engaging story like this *****
A Lot Like Love - One for the chicks, though I suspect I enjoyed it more than the other half as it meandered in places and took a little while to get going. Enjoyable tale on the 'what if' aspect of life and love. Nice bit with the guitar ***
War Of The Worlds - Saw this last night with the father-in-law elect. Stunning special effects aside I felt it stuck to the premise of the original very well, all be it told from a different viewpoint. One of Cruises' best perforamnces IMHO, with a somewhat kooky prolonged cameo from Tim Robbins. *****

Did you enjoy watching The Last Samurai(?) I thought it was brilliant but I know alot of people don't like it.
Out of the list above, i'd recommend Donnie Darko, its got a brilliant and complicated story which gets you thinking about the movie when it's finished and best of all you can buy it for around £3.99 from HMV. The others are also brilliant but aren't as cheap :) .
Yeah, I really enjoyed Last Samurai as it goes. Found it to be quite moving during the battle scene at the end in the field. I'll probably buy Donnie Darko and Fight Club on DVD come next pay day :D

Donnie Darko is a good film, but I'd far from call it "Brilliant". It's just a film based around teenage angst. Jake Gyllenhaal who plays the lead as Darko good. Has anyone seen him in the film bubble boy? That is a funny film :D

I loved "Basic" when it came out with Jackson and Travolta.
The plot was anything but basic. It had more twists in it that that pasta I can't remember the name of.
It was good because if you traced the twists back the motives and plot still stuck unlike some movies where the twists can render the first 1:45hrs of a movie useless.
BASIC was up there for me. I loved IDENTITY too with John Cusack. That was a weird movie.
And yea.... Star Wars III was cool :)
I saw Sin City in the movies. It was okay. Artisitically it achieved its goal but plot wise it was seriously lacking and the characters were all hollow to me. I really didn't care if the anti-hero's died or not to be honest. A fairly shallow movie in my opinion. I'm sad to see they are making Sin City 2 and 3. Maybe they will develop a plot or believable characters in it.
To me.... Kill Bill 1/2 or Pulp Fiction were 100 times better than Sin City.
My list of favs:
Basic
Identity
Pulp Fiction
Kill Bill 1 and 2
Crouching Tiger
Hero
Hard Boiled (the original dubbed John Woo one)
Most Hitchcock :)
Gotta have Star Wars
Matrix 1 (not 2 or 3...they were kind of crap - no I'm serious the Agent Smith/Neo fight bored the heck out of me - I was like ....more smiths....oh for crying out loud...end already. *snore* - that whole movie seemed like a bad dream to me)
Equilibrium
Oh....Snatch.....definately,.....Snatch.... (eee's a pikey!)
Dark City (as long as you were spoiled with previews - previews gave too many secrets away from the movie)
Quick and the Dead and many other Westerns
Saving Private Ryan, Longest Day (with John Wayne), Zulu, and many other war movies
AND DID ANYONE MENTION LORD OF THE RINGS YET?!!!!!
:)
There are many many more :)

I have just watched 'In Good Company' starring Scarlett Johansson, Dennis Quaid and Topher Grace.
Dan Foreman(Quaid) plays a 52 year old ad sales manager working for a sports magazine. He then gets demoted and his job is taking over by Carter Duryea(Grace). Dan's wife is pregnant, Carter happens to be sleeping with Dan's daughter - Alex Foreman(Johansson). I am not going to give anymore away though.
It was an okay film although they could have showed more of Scarlett Johansson. The story was mainly between Quaid and Topher Grace. Quaid and Grace pulled off good performances. Johannson wasn't really involved enough to be given any credit but when she was involved, she did pretty good as usual.
I thought there were some similarites to Lost In Translation but in comparision 'In Good Company' isn't anywhere near as good.
Rating - 7/10

Sums that up quite nicely actually! I kinda enjoyed this too, was pleased it wasn't the typical Hollywood romcom ending too.

Yeah, it's got a kinda Lost In Translation ending but not as good.
I bought 'In good Company' because Scarlett Johansson starred in it but she only appeared about 5 times. Her starring was the movies selling point. I'm not complaining though because it was quite a good movie.
and for tonights viewing... The Wedding Crashers...
Quick one straight after work with the missus, so I worried that the lack of dinner would affect my concentration...
I need not fear so. One of the better comedys I've seen in recent times, it keeps the gags pretty well paced and veers ever so slightly over the line once or twice humour wise, which I like  Still can't work out which of Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughan I like the best, a must see if you enjoyed the likes of 'Meet The Parents' (i think this is better)
There are some soccer movies coming out I dont know if they are out in america yet because i live in Australia. There is the pele documentry, there is also a movie about a young mexican who goes to america to play soccer and then he make it to the english premier league and there is also the movie Real which is about real madrid players.

Well you killed that one Jay-Jay!!!
Recent viewings include 'The Island', which despite a slow start, I thorughly enjoyed. The concept of the film, whilst not totally new (similarish to the Matrix), was done in a way which isn't outlandishly unbelievable. Ewan McGregor and Scarlet Johanson were both strong, and Sean Bean was at his menacing best.
Also seen Crash recently, and was a little disappointed at the lack of direction. Maybe I'm just impatient with films that don't have some sort of focal point, or an ultimate ending, but it meandered at times, but still tells a couple of good stories that intertwine. Don Cheadle is one of my favourite actors, and it was amusing to see Ludacris in a proper film :?

I never got to see that at the cinema, it wasn't shown at suitable times for me :(
Saw Kinky Boots the other day. Wasn't as funny as I hoped it would be, even though it has it's moments. Was however quite a good story, based on real events which I must check out one day...
Also saw Four Brothers recently too. Excellent film, throughly enjoyed even though there is a point where the plot loosens a little. Was good to see Andre Benjamin act, he's probably got a future in films.
world's premiere of green street hooligans will be about end of this month, i think. everybody should/must see this film in near future. there is great taste of football fanatics and fantastic fighting scenes. i have never seen film as good as this

Well, back to the reviews after that shocking interval. :P Saw Mr Bean's Holiday on Sunday. I must admit I was disappointed - the majority of it was taken up with him making faces at the camera rather than any real content, and some of the best jokes were used in the trailer. However, there were some hilarious moments. I suppose I expected too much, but it was very short and not as good as the other Mr Bean film (in the gallery in America). Good, but not great. 7/10.
Favourite film? Gladiator without a doubt - play it frame by frame on your DVD player. :D Bwahahahahahaha.
The other Bean film was enjoyable, but the new one just doesn't appeal to me.
But, in recent times I have seen:
The Hills Have Eyes 2 : Flimsy plot, but I haven't seen the first so maybe it would make more sense then. Quite gory though, and fine to watch as if you're not expecting too much of a workout for your brain.
A History Of Violence : Finally rented this on DVD having been denied the chance to watch it at the cinema by my then girlfriend  A slow starter, and with no ultimate destination, but as subtle in the point it is trying to make as the infrequent but intense violent scenes are graphic.
Layer Cake : Got this for Xmas as part of a triple DVD set, and hadn't seen it before. Really clever film even if I got a little lost once or twice. I'd only ever seen Daniel Craig in the latest Bond film, and I think this is a better part for him. Great twist of sorts towards the end, and an abrupt ending too.

Epic movie- comedy of some hits from last year (mainly chronicles of narnia). nice film, some actions are very nice, but sometimes they wanted to make it funny but sometimes when you want too much... :P at all film is good and watching it wasnt losing time ;) 7/10
Big-*** BUMP.
I can't begin to remember all the films I've seen since, but here's some. I hope you can all share some recent ones too!
Watched Cabin Fever on C4 the other night. Yet another film I wanted to see at the cinema only to be denied by the then g/f  Needless to say I was really looking forward to this. Sadly I was somewhat disappointed. Despite a good start to the story, I felt the end kinda meandered off into the land of silly. Not one for the weak of heart.
I've actually re-watched a few films recently, be it either on TV or DVD. It's amazing how much more you pick up the second time round. Final Fantasy: Advent Children and The Talented Mr Ripley have both been more enjoyable second time round.
Currently cannot wait for the new Transformers movie, and keeping an eye out of FilmFour to give Equilibrium a second viewing too
