I found this comparison of teams on the FIFA website which is quite interesting and i decided to compare: ENGLAND, NORTHEN IRELAND, SCOTLAND and WALES and to be honest Englands 4-0 win over Northen Ireland really should be expected against all these teams. Allthough it is not always that simple.

Fact:
Brazil have been top of the ratings since July 2002
After they won the world cup

I've always thought the ratings are reflective in the top 10, but after that it can get silly. Look at 18 and 20. I'd never think of Iran as the 20th best international team in the world. Germany will always be touted as potential champions in both the EC and WC yet they are only two places above Iran?

The whole ranking system is to be looked at according to the below:

Makes interesting reading...

Germany at 18. now thats a bit dumb considering how they reached the last world sup final etc. also, Spain were at 3 after the world cup or summat, which is unreasonable because they hardly ever do well in major competitions any more

i think that France second is stupid to because they have done poorly in there last two competitions and are drawing to teams like Switzerland who england beat 3-0 inthe world cup

You have to bear in mind how some teams do in qualification and Continent own competitions, like CONCECAF, and the Copa America, theres prolly alot of football that goes off that affects the rankings that we miss through a lack of world coverage.

yeah but the teams they play are crap
i mean all they play are teams like azerbaijan all the time not hard to win when you play them
you shouldn't get points on when you win but who you beat.
like isreal should get more points for drawing with France then England should get for beating azerbaijan

Maybe mexico win every single game but it dosent mean much wen they play teams lik St nevis and kitts

and this is where the system is flawed. USA can play CONCACAF qualification against Jamica, and canada an the small bahaman islands, and recieve as good a share as points as two top european teams will get for beating each other, or Azerbijan. The competition or qualifying your in determines what points you receive, not who your playing in that competition, leading to false results in my opinion.

maybe there should be a massive league, hypothetically speaking, like, every 5 years to determine the ranking - and every country would play each other

Would never happen because of fixture clashing of domestic leagues and internation competition qualifiers. Plus, people already moan about too many games per calender year, so its never going to happen, hence why you put "Hypothetically" i suppose :x
