top idea Jay-Jay... I'll set the ball rolling with one on a potential Arsenal target.. but one that makes me wonder who will make way long-term...

Arsenal may be forced to splash out £16million for Lyon's Ghanaian star Mickael Essien to bolster their midfield ranks and ensure they are not beaten in the race for his signature.

Highbury manager Arsene Wenger is waiting for developments on the futures of Brazilian duo Edu and Gilberto. Gilberto has a back injury which has already kept him out since late September and could finish the rest of his season, while Edu is refusing to sign a new contract.

Sources close to the club believe both outcomes will be negative.

And if neither situation improves soon, Wenger will almost certainly try to sign Essien, a 22-year-old Ghanaian midfielder, who has been attracting interest from across Europe with his impressive form for French League leaders Lyon.

He has caught the eye of Gilles Grimandi, the former Arsenal defender who is now the club's scout in France. Wenger would prefer to wait until the summer to make any move for the player, who is valued at around £17million by Lyon.

But his hand may be forced by the lack of numbers in midfield. Needing reinforcements for the rest of the season, and with Chelsea, Manchester United and Real Madrid also watching Essien closely, Wenger may have to make his move immediately.

Lyon would like to keep Essien, at least until the end of the season, because they are still in the Champions League. But they have shown in the past that they find big-money offers difficult to refuse - as was the case with Steve Marlet and Steed Malbranque who both joined Fulham.

Arsenal are not usually big spenders in the same manner as Manchester United, Chelsea or even Liverpool.

But their record signing, Spaniard Jose Antonio Reyes, signed a year ago out of the blue for what will amount to £16 million - including appearances and achievements - from Sevilla.

And none of Arsenal's three potential competitors for Essien would baulk at the asking price.

Lyon signed Essien two years ago in a £6million deal from Corsican club Bastia after fighting off interest from Paris Saint Germain.

Wenger finishes with Fergie

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger finally looks to have lost his patience with Sir Alex Ferguson.

The Manchester United chief has told a newspaper that Wenger reacted aggressively towards him during the infamous tunnel fracas which took place after The Red Devils' 2-0 win over Arsenal in October.

The incident now nicknamed 'pizza-gate' saw players from both sides apparently brawling and throwing food at each other.

Ferguson claims Wenger called his player cheats and did not take charge of his players.

Clearly enraged by Ferguson, Wenger now claims that he will never be drawn on on the Scotsman again.

"I've always been consistent with that story and told you nothing happened," he said.

"One thing's very simple. I will never answer any question any more about this man.

"If he has to talk, he talks. If he wants to make a newspaper article, he makes a newspaper article.

"He doesn't interest me and doesn't matter to me at all. I will never answer to any provocation from him any more.

"He does what he does in England anyway. Go abroad one day and see how it is."

Ferguson claims that Wenger wanted to start a fight with him after the bust-up in the tunnel.

"In the tunnel Wenger was criticising my players, calling them cheats, so I told him to leave them alone and behave himself," Ferguson said.

"He ran at me with hands raised saying 'what do you want to do about it?'

"To not apologise for the behaviour of the players to another manager is unthinkable. It's a disgrace, but I don't expect Wenger to ever apologise, he's that type of person.

"In the ensuing weeks all you got was a diatribe from Arsenal about being kicked off the pitch and all that nonsense. David Gill phoned David Dein three times to complain but nothing was done.

"The return is on 1 February and they will come out with another diatribe.

"David Gill and I feel we should set the record straight because Arsenal have not written to us to apologise and we would not let that happen here.

"Wenger is always complaining the match was not played in the right spirit.

"We tend to forget the worst disciplinary record of all time was Arsenal's up until last season. In fairness it has improved and now they are seen as paragons of virtue.

"But to Wenger it never happens, it is all some dream or nightmare."

Arsenal have been linked with a potential goalkeeping swap, involving Jens Lehmann and Stuttgart's Timo Hildebrand, whose contract talks in Germany have just collapsed.
Lehmann has become frustrated at his demotion from the Arsenal first team, although he has vowed to fight for his place and is still hoping for a recall this weekend against Newcastle.

Stuttgart's failure to reach agreement over a new deal with Germany's number three Hildebrand, who is out of contract this summer, has nevertheless prompted rumours of a move for Lehmann either this month or at the end of the season

MANYOO EYE KAMENI
Manchester United are stepping up their efforts to sign Espanyol goalkeeper Carlos Kameni after the Cameroon international admitted that he is growing increasingly concerned about the amount of racist chanting from the club's fans. He said: "I have taken Espanyol into my heart. I feel welcome here, but it would be a lie if I did not say that it bothers to me," said Kameni. "I feel very sincere and I would like to say, without it sounding a threat: these acts must stop or my feelings for the club will change."

NO END IN SIGHT
Everton are considering offering striker Duncan Ferguson a new one-year contract, despite reports he was set to be offloaded. James Beattie's three-match suspension has forced Toffees boss David Moyes to rethink the big Scot's situation and he will be rewarded if he continues to impress.

KUFFOUR READY TO MOVE ON
Bayern Munich defender Sammy Kuffour is still waiting to hear from either Inter Milan or Newcastle United before deciding his future. Neither club have contacted the player whose contract expires in the summer. The Ghanaian international's agent said: "Unless something dramatic happens, he will be leaving Bayern Munich. We are aware of the reports about Newcastle and Inter Milan. It's normal that the biggest clubs are interested, but we haven't received a concrete offer from anyone. The player is calm and does not have a preference as to where he'd like to play, only that it is an important league like Italy, England or Spain."

AND THE REST
Matthew le Tissier wants the manager's job at Southampton when Harry Redknapp leaves...Rotherham want more then ten times what Nottingham Forest are prepared to pay for goalkeeper Mike Pollitt...And Arsene Wenger has said that he wants to coach France to the 2006 World Cup.

MADRID, March 2 (Reuters) - Spain coach Luis Aragones has criticised the Spanish Football Federation's (RFEF) decision to fine him 3,000 euros ($3,964) for remarks about France's Thierry Henry, saying he did nothing wrong.
'My first reaction is to say that I don't agree with the sanction. I have done nothing wrong and I don't accept the fact that they have based their judgement on my conduct,' Aragones told sports daily Marca on Wednesday.

'I have never done anything like this in my life. At the moment it does not seem fair, but I will study it in more detail at the federation on Wednesday.'

The federation cleared Aragones of racism but said the 66-year-old should have acted in a more responsible manner.

The controversy began last October when Aragones was heard in a training session telling striker Jose Antonio Reyes he was better than 'that black ****', referring to the Spaniard's Arsenal team mate Henry.

Aragones, who apologised for the comment after widespread criticism, said his words were taken out of context and mistranslated.

'I used the expression 'black ****' when I was talking to Reyes, as a way of saying you are better. It is like a form of motivation.

'If it had been translated correctly it would have said that Henry was a phenomenon, but it wasn't,' he added.

'Resign? Results will determine whether I continue as national coach or not.'

RFEF competition committee president Alfredo Florez confirmed Aragones' punishment was related to his public conduct rather than racism.

'In this committee no one believes that Luis is a racist, nor that he had a racist attitude. We punished him because his conduct went against what we believe is publicly acceptable,' Florez said.

'We believe he occupies an important post as Spain coach and that he was wrong when he made his comments in a training session open to the public and the press.'

Aragones sparked further controversy in November when he defended the comments before a friendly against England.

The match in Madrid was marred by racist abuse of England's black players by sections of the crowd.

Keegan leaves Manchester City

Thu Mar 10, 7:55 PM ET

MANCHESTER, England (AFP) - Kevin Keegan parted company with Manchester City despite his recent insistence that he would see out the remaining year on his contract with the Premiership club.

The former England manager left City "by mutual consent" following a disappointing season and almost certainly walked out of football for the last time.

Keegan, 54, who succeeded Joe Royle as City manager in May 2001, is understood to have left the club after finally losing the support of chairman John Wardle, his key ally on the board.

The emotional manager, who made his name as a striker with Liverpool in the 1970s before going on to captain England, had always stated that City would be his last post in an eventful managerial career that has also included spells at Newcastle United and Fulham. But it now appears likely he will bring that retirement forward and depart a game he graced so gloriously as a player.

Talks between Keegan and Wardle regarding his position as manager began as early as last week, with Keegan leaving the club on Thursday evening following a terrible home performance in the 1-0 defeat by Bolton Wanderers on Monday.

City have named former England full-back Stuart Pearce as caretaker-manager with potential long-term successors including Celtic manager Martin O'Neill, Gordon Strachan and the Crystal Palace boss Iain Dowie.

Keegan's future as City manager had been the subject of constant speculation since he took the unusual step at the end of last season of announcing that he would not seek a new contract to replace his deal which ran until May 2006.

Despite claims by Keegan that his decision left City with ample time to find a new manager, growing unrest among supporters and also inside the dressing-room led to his position becoming untenable.

David James, the City goalkeeper, had twice called in recent weeks for the managerial situation to be clarified at the club in a bid to end the speculation and prevent City becoming a rudderless ship.

Keegan, who quit as England manager in October 2000 after admitting he was not up to the demands of the role at international level, succeeded in his initial task of guiding the club back to the top flight after claiming the old First Division title in his first season at Maine Road.

A ninth-place finish in the club's first campaign back at the top level, after spending a club record 13 million pounds to sign the Paris St Germain forward Nicolas Anelka, maintained City's upward curve under Keegan's management.

But there were already signs of poor transfer spending with Keegan investing over 30 million pounds on Lucien Mettomo, Christian Negouai, Jon Macken, Sun Jihai, Sylvain Distin, Matias Vuoso and Nicolas Anelka in a nine-month period.

In total, he spent well over 50 million pounds on veteran players such as Robbie Fowler, Trevor Sinclair and Steve McManaman who never reached the heights expected of them.

With little sign of new investment coming the club's way to boost his transfer fund, Keegan admitted only this week that he was reluctant to blood the club's promising youngsters.

This was an ironic turn considering that Shaun Wright-Phillips, one of the few bright spots under Keegan, was the product of the club's youth policy rather than his spending.

City are due to hold a news conference later Friday.

I think it's about time someone put Chelski in their place!

UEFA have charged Chelsea, manager Jose Mourinho, assistant manager Steve Clarke and club security official Les Miles with bringing the game into disrepute with "wrong and unfounded statements" after a Champions League match against Barcelona.

UEFA said the charges related to "false declarations" in a report sent by Chelsea following their Champions League first leg tie against Barca at the Nou Camp on February 23.

After the match, Mourinho accused Barca manager Frank Rijkaard of going into the referees' room to see Anders Frisk during the half-time interval and Chelsea included that accusation in a report sent to UEFA.

A UEFA statement on www.uefa.com said: "UEFA today announced the opening of disciplinary proceedings against Chelsea FC, head coach José Mourinho, assistant manager Steve Clarke and security responsible Les Miles, for making false declarations, notably in the complaint sent by Chelsea FC following the UEFA Champions League match played against FC Barcelona at the Camp Nou on 23 February 2005.

"By further disseminating these wrong and unfounded statements, Chelsea FC allowed its technical staff to deliberately create a poisoned and negative ambience amongst the teams and to put pressure on the refereeing officials," the statement continued.

UEFA said the disciplinary case would be dealt with by the UEFA Control and Disciplinary Body on March 31 March.

Article 5, paragraph 1 of the UEFA disciplinary regulations - 'Principles of Conduct' - state: that "Member associations, clubs, as well as their players, officials and members, shall conduct themselves according to the principles of loyalty, integrity and sportsmanship."

In addition, Article 5, paragraph 2 d) stipulates that a breach of these principles is incurred by anyone "whose conduct brings the sport of football, and UEFA in particular, into disrepute".

Birmingham are close to agreeing a £3million deal with Arsenal to tie up the permanent transfer of winger Jermaine Pennant, who is expected to be released from prison at the end of next week.

Blues will pay an initial fee of around £500,000 with the remainder of the package depending on appearances and success-related incentives.

Pennant is set to be allowed out on parole mid-way through a three month sentence for drink-driving offences.

City boss Steve Bruce put his faith in Pennant by bringing him to St Andrews during the January transfer window when he knew a custodial sentence was a possibility.

Bruce said: 'Our managing director Karren Brady has virtually done a deal for Jermaine and the next step is to agree terms with the player.

'We've said from the minute he came here that we would like to make the deal permanent and we've seen how good a player Jermaine is in the few games he has played for us.'

Bruce reiterated Blues' plan to keep Pennant - who will be electronically tagged for the first weeks after his release - on the straight and narrow.

He said: 'I think he appreciates that there is someone who is willing to try and help him rather than just wash their hands of him. Sometimes people need help and education rather than just being battered.

'Before the sentence we got Jermaine a flat up here, we got him away from the distractions of London and we had someone with him for the best part of every day. His girlfriend was playing a big part in that too.

'We will do everything we can to try and put and keep him on the straight and narrow. He's done wrong and we've all done stupid things when we were younger and he admits that now .

'He has had to accept his punishment because he did wrong. He realises he has been stupid but as long as he learns from it, that is the main thing.

'He has got the chance now to get his life back in order. He has been here a few weeks and he has been very good and I hope that continues for the next five or six years.

'Then we will see the best of him. He is a very good player and he can be a major asset to Birmingham.'

Also, rumour mill has it that Arsenal may try and re-sign midfielder Steven Sidwell, whom they sold to Reading 2 years ago. Sidwell was recently voted as best player outside the Premiership.

Couple of snippets from today's news, all courtesy of Soccernet.com

Fredi Kanoute today returned to London and assured Tottenham fans: 'I'm fine.'
Mali fans threatened to kill the striker when their pitch invasion ended a World Cup qualifier against Togo in Bamako.

Mali, for whom Kanoute plays, were a goal up until the 83rd minute when Togo scored two quick goals that looked certain to win the match for them.

However, some of the 70,000 crowd then rioted and stormed on to the pitch demanding: 'Give us Frederic Kanoute and Mamadou Bayoko. We are going to kill them.'

According to Tottenham, he 'is absolutely fine' and expected back in training tomorrow.

Tottenham officials had earlier in the day been struggling to make contact with Kanoute, a former West Ham and Lyon striker.

They were unable to get through to him via telephone, however that would appear to be explained by the likelihood Kanoute was in the air.

A spokesman had admitted there was 'a lot of concern' at White Hart Lane following the news of the crowd disturbance.

Bamako was said to be in a state of turmoil after residents joined football fans in looting and destruction after the match.

Police used tear gas as rioters tried to ransack the offices of the Mali Football Federation and burned down the building which contains the Mali Olympic Committee.

Kanoute, who claimed qualification for Mali through his parents and has become the team's leading player, has not commented on whether he intends to play on at international level.

'Ronaldo, don't forget your shinpads'

Uruguay have warned Brazil striker Ronaldo to wear lots of shin pads when he faces them in Wednesday's World Cup qualifier.
Coach Jorge Fossati said that he would not be lured into a false sense of security by Ronaldo's recent drop in form.

'None of us are daft enough to think that he's going through a bad patch and therefore we don't have to be careful with him,' Fossati was reported as saying by Uruguayan media.

'If he plays, then he should wear lots of shin pads because its going to be tough for him.'

Uruguay captain Paolo Montero, who has played for Juventus for more than a decade, is regarded as one of the world's toughest defenders and holds the Serie A record for red cards.

His partner at the centre of the defence, Brazil-based Diego Lugano, also has a reputation for tough-tackling.

Uruguay, who have never lost at home to Brazil in a competitive match, are fifth in the 10-nation South American qualifying group with 15 points from 12 games. Brazil are second with 23 points.

Ljungberg denies Sweden quit threat

Arsenal midfielder Freddie Ljungberg is looking forward to playing for Sweden in next year's World Cup after denying reports he is considering quitting international football.

The Swedish ace, 28 next month, scored twice against Bulgaria in a World Cup qualifier at the weekend and was quoted in some areas as saying: 'A decision to quit the Swedish team would allow me to focus more on playing well in my club side.'

But today he insisted: 'That is not my intention.'

He explained: 'In the Swedish press conference I was asked about my international career and I clearly said that although some players retire early from their international sides to focus on their club football, that is not my intention.

'I have never said I wanted to quit playing for Sweden. On the contrary I think we had a great game on Saturday and I am very much looking forward to World Cup 2006.'

Kanoute likely to quit Mali

Tottenham striker Fredi Kanoute is considering his international future with Mali after surviving 'the scariest experience of his career'.
The 27-year-old was threatened by his own supporters after Mali lost a World Cup qualifier 2-1 to Togo, ending their hopes of qualifying for next year's tournament in Germany.

The match in the Malian capital Bamako had to be abandoned, with angry fans claiming they would 'kill' Kanoute, who is now considering whether to retire from international football.

'I don't know if I will play for Mali again. I have my family to think about,' he said.

There was concern yesterday for Kanoute's safety when initial attempts to contact him failed, but he has now reported back safe and well and resumes training with Spurs today.

'I was very frightened. At no stage did I actually think I would die but it was a seriously dangerous situation for all of us,' he said.

'I'm just relieved to be back. It was a very scary experience, the worst I've had to deal with in my entire career.

'I don't think I did anything to deserve being singled out. I had missed a couple of chances but those were made by me. I didn't miss any easy opportunities to score.'

i think this shows wat i farce the ratings are and it does not suggest who is better then who

for example how can Mexico be higher then Italy, England, Portugal and Netherlands. I think that Italy, England, Portugal and Netherlands would beat Mexico nine eight times out of ten.
Yes maybe Mexico have one more matches then these four teams but against teams like Peru and Costa Rico.

The ratings shouldn't go on if you win but who you win. If this were the case then for example Greece would be higher then they are and really deserve to be above some of the big teams like Spain, England, Portugal and the rest.

Lehmann banned for dousing referee
Arsenal goalkeeper Jens Lehmann has been banned for two European matches after throwing water at the referee and a linesman following Arsenal's Champions League exit in March.

Announcing the punishment on Tuesday, ruling body UEFA said Lehmann had twice thrown water over Italian referee Massimo De Santis and a linesman in the players' tunnel after Arsenal's 1-0 win over Bayern Munich at Highbury on March 9.

UEFA said on their website that German international Lehmann was found guilty of 'a deliberate pestering act' that displayed a 'striking lack of respect towards the referee'.

'Perrin to take on Pompey vacancy'
Alain Perrin is set to become Portsmouth's new manager tomorrow, with Pompey chairman Milan Mandaric admitting the Frenchman is his 'number one candidate'. The 48-year-old former Marseille boss could be assisted by former Tottenham manager and director of football David Pleat on a short-term basis.

Mandaric told Sky Sports News: 'We have our number one candidate and that is Alain Perrin from France. Also David Pleat would come for seven games to help him out on all the issues of English football.'

Mandaric is hoping to secure Perrin's services on a two-year contract in addition to the run-in of the current season.

'Alain is not coming just for seven games, he's coming to sign a contract as a manager for seven games plus two years,' the Pompey chairman added on Sky Sports News.

'We can't confirm today that it will be done but there is a strong possibility that it will be done.'

Crespo desperate for Milan move
Chelsea striker Hernan Crespo has declared that he is 'ready to make any sacrifice' in order to join AC Milan on a permanent basis in the summer.

The Argentina international, who is on a season-long loan at the San Siro from the Premiership leaders, has impressed while with the Rossoneri.

His goals have helped Milan secure joint-top spot in Serie A, and his two strikes against Manchester United in the Champions League recently secured a 2-0 aggregate victory and a place for his team in the last eight of the tournament.

Ahead of his side's first-leg clash against city rivals Inter Milan on Wednesday, Crespo admitted he had set his heart on a move to Milan.

'The Milan and Chelsea executives are working in order to reach an agreement,' Crespo told Gazzetta Dello Sport.

'I believe an agreement will be reached soon. From my point of view I've told them that I am ready to make any sacrifice in order to continue to wear the colours of AC Milan.

'My dream is to remain at Milan until the end of my career but Chelsea is in the middle.'

The striker failed to settle at Stamford Bridge after moving to the West London club in the summer of 2003 from Inter for a fee of £16.8million.

Chelsea striker Mateja Kezman claims he wants to leave the club because Blues boss Jose Mourinho will not give him a regular first-team place.

The Serbia & Montenegro international joined Chelsea from PSV Eindhoven as one of the most prolific hitmen in European football. He had scored 105 goals in 122 Eredivisie appearances for PSV but at Chelsea has managed so far only four in 25 Premiership matches.

Kezman, 26, told Dutch magazine Voetbal International: "I cannot cope with this for very much longer - I am now at the peak of my career. If I know I have another year like this ahead it makes no more sense and I will go to the big boss (Roman Abramovich) and talk to him."

Kezman claimed he had many clubs interested in securing his services. He said: "At this moment there are 10 clubs interested in me.

"I am keeping the PSV option open and know I am always welcome there and still want to play there. In my head I am keeping my options open but I don't know where my future lies."

In the interview, Kezman also said he preferred Barcelona to Chelsea and compared PSV coach Guus Hiddink favourably to Mourinho.

Roy Carroll is willing to sign a new contract with Manchester United - providing Sir Alex Ferguson does not bring in even more competition during the summer.

After seizing the number-one slot from Tim Howard in September, Carroll was axed by Ferguson following his costly Champions League blunder against AC Milan two months ago.

His current concern surrounds the competition he will face to force his way back into the first-team picture and his agent Francis Martin said: "His priority all along has been to stay at United. We have had negotiations with the club and we knew there wouldn't be any movement on the figures."

He continued: "But one of the major factors for Roy has always been how he is valued and where he is in the pecking order.

"He has always wanted to get that clear in his mind," Martin told the Manchester Evening News.

Chester City have appointed Keith Curle as their managerial successor to Ian Rush.

The former England international will officially begin his new duties on Monday and be unveiled to supporters before Saturday's last home match of the season against play-off contenders Northampton Town.

The news comes less than a month after Rush stepped down from the Saunders Honda Stadium hot-seat, with the former Liverpool striker having fallen out with the club over their decision to sack his assistant Mark Aizlewood.

Curle's return to football management at Chester comes after the former Manchester City player was sacked as Mansfield Town boss back in December for a breach of club discipline.

Despite his acrimonious departure from Field Mill, Curle was delighted to be back in football management with The Blues.

"The club didn't make a knee-jerk reaction with the appointment," Curle told Sky Sports News.

"He (Chester chairman Stephen Vaughan) wanted to find out as much information about myself and obviously, all the other candidates as well.

"It's very pleasing to have been chosen and it's my opportunity to step in at Chester and develop the football club.

"The one thing I want Chester to do is I want them to be hard-working, enthusiast and entertaining.

"The only way you going to get supporters back into the ground to maximum capacity is by playing entertaining, winning football."

=D> Good Job To The Chairman, Curle was the best choice out of the shortlist, and he got Mansfield to the playoff final last season so things are looking up =D>

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger could 'look at' the possibility of signing England captain David Beckham this summer.

Beckham, 29, is currently with Spanish giants Real Madrid and has often been linked with a move back to the Premiership since leaving Manchester United in 2003.

Wenger is quoted in the News of the World: 'We will have some money to spend in the summer and if there was a chance to sign David Beckham, we would look at it.

'If the situation arises that it is possible, why not?'

Beckham played for Madrid in their 2-0 win over Real Sociedad yesterday, closing the gap on La Liga leaders Barcelona to three points.

Brazilian midfielder Edu has confirmed he will leave Arsenal at the end of the season.

The 26-year-old is out of contract this summer but after a move to Valencia broke down in January Gunners boss Arsene Wenger had hoped he might agree new terms.

"I've decided to go after the FA Cup final but I haven't decided which club I'm going to join," Edu told BBC Sport.

He added: "A lot of clubs have asked about me and since January my agent has spoken to Real Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia and Juventus.

"To be honest I don't know what will be the best thing for me to do. Real Madrid wanted to talk to me but then they signed Thomas Gravesen.

"I don't want to go to a club and just be part of the squad, that's not my plan."

Edu, who since joining Arsenal has been capped by his country, has featured as a substitute in recent weeks after recovering from a broken toe.

He joined the north London club in January 2001 from Corinthians after the move was delayed when he was refused admission to the United Kingdom because he held a fake Portuguese passport.

Stuart Pearce has been confirmed as the new manager of Manchester City on a two-year contract.

The announcement was widely anticipated after Pearce guided the Blues to the brink of a UEFA Cup place in just two months, since stepping in following the departure of Kevin Keegan.

Chairman John Wardle originally intended to delay naming Keegan's successor until the summer but those plans have had to be changed given the impact Pearce has had on the Eastlands outfit.

The announcement will have the overwhelming backing of the City squad, and the club's supporters and should guarantee a full house for Sunday's crucial clash with Middlesbrough.

Victory is almost certain to guarantee European football next season, an unthinkable prospect when the former England skipper took charge.

Martin O'Neill and Iain Dowie were originally linked to the post but four wins from eight games, and a current seven-match unbeaten run, made all talk of alternative choices irrelevant.

And, rather than wait until Sunday, Wardle opted to link the appointment to the unveiling of a mosaic in honour of the most successful manager in the club's history, Joe Mercer.

Couple of transfer stories floating about today...

MADRID, May 15 (Reuters) - Real Madrid issued a statement on Sunday saying they had no interest in signing Manchester United centre-back Rio Ferdinand or any other member of the club's squad.

'Real Madrid have written to Manchester United denying that they have any interest in signing Rio Ferdinand or in any other player that belongs to the English club,' read a statement on the club's website.

The Primera Liga side, who saw arch-rivals Barcelona clinch the Spanish title on Saturday, said they were responding to reports in the British press that they wanted to recruit the England international.

Real signed England centre-back Jonathan Woodgate from Newcastle United for close to €20 million last August, but the 25-year-old has yet to make his debut for the club because of a long-term thigh injury.

Two english centre backs at a Spanish culb? That'll be the day...

Newcastle have declined to comment on reports suggesting they have tabled a bid of up to £20million for Real Madrid striker Michael Owen.

Manager Graeme Souness has been repeatedly linked with a summer swoop for the England international after admitting he is the sort of player he would like to bring to St James' Park as he launched his rebuilding programme.

However, a club spokesman said only: 'We never comment on media speculation.'

That may not shed any light on the situation, and perhaps a better indication is that when the Magpies launched their bid to land then Everton striker Wayne Rooney last August with a £20million opening offer, they made their intentions plain.

The reports came as the club prepared for the final game of a dreadfully disappointing campaign at home to Chelsea this afternoon with many fans mulling over whether or not to renew seasons tickets.

As strange as it was when he left Liverpool, it would be even weirder to see him in the black and white stripes :?

Also seen some speculation linking Kluivert, who will be leaving Newcastle at the end of this season, to Bolton Wanderers...

Saints Fans Angry At Chairman

Southampton fans vented their frustration and anger on chairman Rupert Lowe as the club's 27-year reign in the top-flight of English football ended with a 2-1 defeat at St Mary's. And boss Harry Redknapp, who may now quit football altogether, put the responsibility down to the all-too-frequent changes in manager, as well as the large size and poor quality of his squad. At the final whistle, thousands of Southampton fans called for Lowe's resignation from the club.

H.Redknapp is a great guy, hope he doesnt retire from football altogether!

Bolton are poised to sign striker El-Hadji Diouf from Liverpool on a long-term deal.

The 24-year-old Senegal international has been a revelation at the Reebok Stadium after arriving from Anfield on loan.

Despite two three-match bans he finished Bolton's top scorer with nine goals and has become a favourite with supporters.

Diouf rounded off the campaign in style yesterday with another impressive show in the 3-2 home defeat of Everton.

The player cost Liverpool £10million from Lens and there were fears Bolton would be unable to put together a financial package to suit all parties.

'We are very close to doing a deal with Liverpool. That's all I can say at the moment,' he told the Manchester Evening News. 'He's the first target and, when we've done that, we'll have a look at other things.'

Diouf has emphasised time and again he wants to become a full-time Bolton player - and he showed his feelings by spraying the chairman with champagne at the end of the game with Everton!

Might be a good post-season signing for the Wanderers, since Liverpool may not find a good reason to keep him when the Kop already have Morientes,Cisse and Baros onboard. The fee received may also to used to pay for the rumoured transfer of Pablo Aimar.

Middlesbrough have agreed the £6.5million signing of Portsmouth striker Aiyegbeni Yakubu after he agreed personal terms and underwent a medical on Teesside.

The 22-year-old, who was left out of Pompey's final game of the season at West Brom on Sunday, was at Boro's training headquarters to discuss a move which has become one of football's worst-kept secrets.

"Middlesbrough Football Club have agreed a fee with Portsmouth for the transfer of striker Ayegbeni Yakubu," said a club spokesman. "Personal terms have also been agreed with a view to the 22-year-old Nigerian joining the club on July 1."

"No further details about the transfer are being disclosed at this stage," added the Boro spokesman.

However, in an interview with Sky Sports News, chief executive Keith Lamb said: "We do not anticipate any problems. We expect him to be a Middlesbrough player in the very near future.

"He fulfils Steve McClaren's requirements. He is young, he is a goalscorer, he is the next generation. We have got (Jimmy Floyd) Hasselbaink and (Mark) Viduka, and I am sure with Yakubu joining our strike-force, it will give us even more firepower."

Boro's interest in Yakubu is well-known and their intent to sign him this summer was made clear long before new Pompey boss Alain Perrin admitted he was resigned to losing him.

McClaren was hugely impressed with the African's display in a 5-1 demolition of Boro at Fratton park on the final day of last season in which he scored four times.

Record-signing Massimo Maccarone is due to return from a loan spell back in Italy, while Viduka, Malcolm Christie and Joseph-Desire Job are fighting their way back from injury. Szilard Nemeth and youngster Danny Graham are also on the books.

However, asked is a successful conclusion to the Yakubu deal would result in any departures, Lamb replied: "Who knows? But at the moment, we are interested in adding to the squad and improving the squad, and Yakubu is a very valuable addition."

Thierry Henry has been ruled out of Arsenal's plans for Saturday's FA Cup final against Manchester United.
The France striker was left out of the Gunners side for yesterday's match at Birmingham, and Arsenal have confirmed that he will not be involved at the Millennium Stadium.

Henry, who scored 30 goals this season, returned to action after a groin injury in last Wednesday's 7-0 win over Everton but suffered a recurrence of an old Achilles injury in the game.

That has been diagnosed as sufficiently serious for manager Arsene Wenger to declare him unfit for the match which for both United and Arsenal represents a last chance to finish the season with silverware.

Portsmouth midfielder Patrik Berger is poised to join Aston Villa after agreeing personal terms with the midlands club.

Berger, who is out of contract at Fratton Park this summer, has agreed to sign a two-year deal with Villa.

Berger's agent Barry Silkman confirmed: "There has been a lot of interest in Patrik but he is going to Aston Villa. It is a done deal."

The Czech international moved to Portsmouth two years ago after spending seven seasons with Liverpool.

It has been common knowledge for several months that Villa manager David O'Leary has wanted to sign the 31-year-old and now the move is close to reaching its conclusion.

Berger is formally set to join Villa when his contract expires at the end of the month and O'Leary is hoping it will be the first of several new arrivals at the club.

He has around £15million to spend after chairman Doug Ellis loosened the purse strings and has already given him a wish list of players.

A striker is one of O'Leary's priorities and he has already been linked with Southampton's Kevin Phillips and Liverpool's Milan Baros.

But he is keen to draft in several new faces to supplement one of the smallest squads in the Barclays Premiership.

Berger scored three goals during the current campaign for Pompey and has won 40 caps for his country.

I think that's quite a canny buy by O'Leary, Berger is a good player, capable of producing stunning goals.

Newcastle are targeting Juventus and France midfielder Olivier Kapo, according to the player himself.
The 24-year-old, who has struggled for playing time with the Italian giants, is reconsidering his future in the face of interest from a number of clubs including, he claims, Graeme Souness' side.

'Newcastle want me, as well as Betis Seville. I am going to have to make a choice,' he told French sports newspaper L'Equipe.

'On the other hand Pavel (Nedved) tells me to fight and stay with Juventus.'

The former Auxerre player, who has nine caps for Les Bleus, also claims Monaco are interested in bringing him back to France.

2. Go back to his native home.(Monaco)

3. Play with the other black-and-white team and could be one of the regular first XI in EPL. (Newcastle)

PARIS, May 18 (Reuters) - Chelsea's Ivory Coast striker Didier Drogba said he had struggled to adapt to life in England and did not rule out a return to Olympique Marseille.
'I'm feeling a bit homesick,' Drogba told Wednesday's issue of the French sports daily L'Equipe. 'Life in England is not easy. You have to adapt and I'm finding that difficult. It's so different. My morale has suffered from that.

'On the other hand there have been fantastic moments such as the title celebrations with Chelsea.

'That was unforgettable and that's what I came for. You have to admit that football in England is something really exceptional.'

Drogba, who joined from Marseille last July, has struggled for his best form this season and has had injury worries, most recently a knee problem.

He paid tribute to Chelsea coach Jose Mourinho, saying he had always trusted him, but also said that Chelsea's playing style did not always suit him.

'In the second part of the season, I was only getting long balls and I'd rather receive the ball right in my feet,' he said.

As for a return to France, Drogba said: 'Marseille is in my heart. I said it when I left and I haven't changed my mind in a few months.

'Now I'm English champion and one day, I want to be French champion, preferably with Marseille, obviously.

'But I would return to Marseille only if they had a team who could fight for the title. It's not the case today, with or without me.'

Barcelona have confirmed the signing of PSV Eindhoven midfielder Mark van Bommel.

The 28-year-old Holland international, who has in the past been linked with a move to the Premiership, has agreed a three-year contract with the Spanish giants, who won their first Primera Liga title since 1999 last weekend.

Van Bommel will officially join Barca on July 1 after his contract with PSV runs out, although he will link up with his new team-mates in mid-June after representing Holland in their World Cup qualifier against Finland.

A number of clubs around Europe had been linked with Van Bommel but Barcelona revealed they had secured the player's future well before Wednesday's announcement.

"Following an agreement between Barcelona and the player, it was decided that the news would not be made public until Wednesday, after the team had won the league title," Barcelona confirmed the signing on their website.

More news on van bommel -

Barcelona have beaten a host of clubs, including Tottenham, to the signature of Holland star Mark van Bommel. The midfielder, 28, has signed a three-year contract with the Spanish champions and joins on a Bosman free transfer from PSV Eindhoven. Van Bommel, who was also wanted by Germany's Borussia Dortmund and Schalke, said last year that he was keen to play for Spurs boss Martin Jol. But he has opted to join another Dutch coach, Frank Rijkaard, at the Nou Camp. Van Bommel, who began his career at Fortuna Sittard before winning four Dutch titles with PSV, has long been courted by some of Europe's biggest clubs.Manchester United, Arsenal and Italian club Lazio have all been linked with him, while Everton boss David Moyes admitted his interest in the player last summer. He was the star of an impressive PSV side which reached this season's Champions League semi-finals, where they were unfortunate to lose to AC Milan. Capped 30 times by his country, Van Bommel has beome the 17th Dutchman to make the move to Barca, following the likes of Holland legends Johan Cruyff and Johan Neeskens.

Former Arsenal midfielder Edu is to join Spanish club Valencia this summer on a five-year deal, according to the club.

Quique Sanchez Flores was today announced as the new Valencia coach and the club also revealed Brazilian Edu would be at the Mestalla next season.

The club's new director of sport Javier Subirats made the announcements today, ending months of speculation surrounding the likely destination of the want-away Gunner.

In a statement on the club's official website, Valencia said: 'President (Juan Bautista) Soler has confirmed the signing of Edu, the Arsenal player and Brazil international, who will join the team on the first of July and who will play for the team in the next five seasons.'

The 40-year-old Sanchez Flores was a Valencia player for 10 years before joining Real Madrid in 1995.

Sanchez Flores began his coaching career with Real Madrid in 2003, working with their junior sides before joining newly-promoted Getafe last summer.

At Getafe he enjoyed an excellent first season, guiding the club that many expected to go straight back to the second division to a comfortable 13th-placed finish in the Primera Liga.

After winning the league and the UEFA Cup last season, Valencia have endured a frustrating campaign this time around and finished a disappointing seventh, a situation that sees them sneak into Europe only through the Intertoto Cup.

Former Chelsea coach Claudio Ranieri began the campaign as head coach under huge pressure following the La Liga and UEFA Cup double achieved by his predecessor Rafael Benitez, who has gone on to lift the Champions League with Liverpool.

But despite a good start, Ranieri was unable to provide the success the fans of Los Che craved and was sacked in February.

He was replaced by Antonio Lopez, who announced after Sunday's win over Osasuna he would not be continuing as coach.

England defender Rio Ferdinand could become the first big name to leave Malcolm Glazer's Manchester United if he refuses a final 100,000 pounds-a-week contract offer.

Despite manager Alex Ferguson's insistence the 26-year-old would not be allowed to leave, the Daily Telegraph reported that American tycoon Glazer has decided the five-year deal to replace the final two years of his contract was Ferdinand's last offer.

With huge interest payments on Glazer's debt after wrapping up a 790 million pound takeover earlier this month, the American was keen to cut spending.

Ferguson has been promised no more than 26 million pounds a year to spend on the transfer market and the new United regime would prefer to sell Ferdinand now rather than run the risk of the player leaving for nothing in 2007.

Ferdinand was in the news for other reasons on Tuesday when The Sun reported he was among a group of footballers questioned after alleged stag party high jinks at a hotel.

A police investigation was launched into an allegation that a fellow guest was sprayed in the face with a fire extinguisher during the early morning disturbance.

Ferdinand and Stoke defender Michael Duberry had been at a stag party thrown by Millwall midfielder Jody Morris.

Police confirmed all three footballers were among those spoken to but no one was arrested and it was unclear which, if any, of the footballers were involved in the alleged assault.

The alleged incident came just hours after reports Ferdinand was involved in a fracas in a Swedish nightclub.

It kinna seem "Moneybags" Glazer is abit tyranny, true, he may own Man Utd, but Ferdinand is essential for Man Utd if they still hope to put up a strong fight against the likes of Chelsea and Arsenal for English dominance.

Since he allegedly bought the club for 790million surely he can promises a big wage for Ferdinand to remain at Utd, and he would certainly have the amount of cold-hard cash to spend on new players insteaed of JUST 26million?

PSV Eindhoven say they will allow the 24-year-old to speak to Manchester United after confirming the Premiership club had made an approach.

Speaking ahead of the World Cup qualifier against Kuwait tomorrow, Park told the Korea Times: 'It is true that I have had an offer from Manchester United.

PSV spokesman Pedro Salazer-Hewitt told the Daily Mail: 'The only person who will decide his future is Park.

'We want to keep him, as we want to keep all our best players, but we know the system and we know that if another club make an official offer it's a possibility we will lose the player.

'United have officially asked about Park and the player has been informed.'

United have already made one move in the transfer market since the season ended by agreeing terms with Dutch goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar.

Italian Pierluigi Collina, widely regarded as the best referee in the world, will take charge of his last match in the second leg of the Serie A relegation play-off between Bologna and Parma on June 18.

Italian referees must retire at the age of 45 and Collina, who reached that age in February, has not received the necessary exemption from Italy's Football League to continue next season.

Collina, a financial advisor by profession, has worked as a referee since 1977, taking charge of his first Serie A match in 1991 and getting his FIFA badge four years later.

He has been voted world referee of the year five times.

Among his career highlights were Manchester United's last-gasp comeback to beat Bayern Munich in the 1999 Champions League final and the 2002 World Cup final between Brazil and Germany.

I agree, he has always found the fine balance of letting games flow and penalising where necesary. I think he should come to England to continue his career =D>

And on a seperate note, another world news worth snippet... Arsene Wenger signs an Englishman!

Arsenal are closing in on Lincoln City's promising young defender Jack Hobbs.

The 16-year-old has attracted the interest of both Arsenal and Manchester United, but it now looks as though The Gunners are in the driving seat.

Arsene Wenger is not usually known for bringing in English players, but he has had great success with the young players from across Europe that he has brought through the ranks at Highbury.

Young stopper Hobbs has now caught his attention and the FA Cup winners are now busy thinking over Lincoln's claim for compensation.

Hobbs is currently on apprenticeship forms at Sincil Bank and Imps boss Keith Alexander is keen to keep him with the League Two side - which is why he has turned down approaches to take Hobbs on trial.

Although all parties remain quiet on the deal, Hobbs' agent Charles Collymore says that a club has made an offer.

"I am not willing to name the club who has made the offer, but I would say it is certainly agreeable to everyone concerned," Collymore told the Lincolnshire Echo.

"I don't expect anything to happen immediately, but I'm expecting more news in the next two weeks.

"There has been a lot of interest from a number of London clubs, but only one has really followed it up.

"It is easy to understand why Jack is regarded as hot property.

"He is a good size and is English, and we all know how important it is to find talented home-grown players."

So with Liverpool getting the right to defend England now only have 2 teams in the UEFA cup, instead of the usual 3.

Anyhow read for yourselves :)

Premier League want City in UEFA Cup

THE Premier League are unhappy that England are not getting three UEFA Cup spots - and are pushing for Manchester City to be given a place in the competition.

UEFA are allowing Liverpool to defend their Champions League title, but confirmed today that City would not be given the newly-available UEFA Cup spot.

However a spokesman told the Premiership's official website: “We are very pleased for Liverpool Football Club and in many ways UEFA have taken a brave and correct decision.

"However we do not feel this should have been at the expense of the English game’s third UEFA Cup place, nor the Champions League pool as distributed between the four qualified clubs.

"As a result we will be asking the FA to formally re-nominate Bolton Wanderers, Middlesbrough FC and Manchester City in the three UEFA Cup places allocated to the English game.”

Not sure if we need a midfielder of his stature...

Real Madrid midfielder Guti is seeking a move to Arsenal this summer as he prepares to leave the club where he has spent his entire career.

The 28-year-old wants regular first-team football after finding himself left out in the cold following the arrival of Thomas Gravesen and his agent has made it clear that Highbury would be Guti's preferred destination despite also being linked with Liverpool, Juventus and AC Milan.

Zoran Vekic told the Daily Mail: "After Real Madrid, his only desire if he was to move to England would be to play for Arsenal, because of their style, their team spirit and of course they have a great coach."

According to the report, Vekic is to meet with the Gunners this week for the £12million-rated midfielder.Courtesy of ananova.com 21/06/05

Arsenal have made a $25 million bid for Brazilian wonderboy Robinho after officials flew to Nuremburg last night to make a final check on the striker during the Confederations Cup semi-final against Germany.
The 21-year-old Santos star has been repeatedly linked with a move to Real Madrid but the Gunners have now outbid the La Liga giants, who believed they could land the striker for approximately $18 million, according to the Spanish media.

Arsenal chief scout Steve Rowley has made a number of trips to scout South American youngsters and Robinho, who has been likened to Ronaldinho because of his dazzling dribbling skills, is top of the list.

The Sao Paulo born player was heavily linked with a move away from Brazil following the kidnapping of his mother, Marina Lima de Souza, from a family barbecue in December last year. She was later returned after being held for ransom.

Real were the club most frequently mentioned with a swoop for the unsettled youngster and the Gunners can expect a transfer battle.Courtesy of ananova.com 26/06/05

Kezman rejects Benfica switch

Chelsea striker Mateja Kezman has arrived in Spain to hold talks with Atletico Madrid over a possible move to the Vicente Calderon stadium.

Atletico said on its website: "Atletico and Chelsea ... have been negotiating over all the details of the transfer, which may be concluded in a few hours."

The 26-year-old Kezman, who joined Chelsea for £5m last year, scored just four league goals in 24 games.

He wants to leave because of a lack of first-team opportunities.

Earlier this month Kezman was dropped from the Serbia-Montenegro squad for the World Cup qualifier against Belgium.

Atletico insisted Spain international striker Fernando Torres would not be part of any transfer involving Kezman, who is 26.

"Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich can forget about Torres," said Atletico president Enrique Cerezo.

Atletico finished 11th in Spain's 20-team championship and scored just 40 goals in 38 league games.

Earlier in July it fired coach Cesar Ferrando and replaced him with former Boca Juniors coach Carlos Bianchi.

Kezman would become Atletico's first new player since the season ended.

The striker made his name with Partizan Belgrade before joining PSV in 2000 for a four-year spell in which he scored 105 goals.

French striker Jeremie Aliadiere has completed a one-year loan move to Celtic from Arsenal.
The 22-year-old arrived in Glasgow on Thursday afternoon to become Gordon Strachan's second signing.

"It looks as if the manager is building an attack-minded team. I hope that is the plan and we score lots of goals," said Aliadiere.

"I am excited about being part of that. I want to help the team and get forward to score a lot of goals."

Aliadiere has made just a handful of starts in his time at Arsenal and has had to contend with a number of injuries, most notably a knee ligament injury that ruled him out for most of last season.

He joins defender Mo Camara at the club and Maciej Zurawski is also expected to sign at the beginning of next week.

Striker Craig Beattie has also penned a new three-year deal with the club.

A statement on Arsenal's website said: "The 22-year-old striker will be with the SPL club for the entire campaign in order to gain invaluable experience.

"But he remains part of Arsene Wenger's plans and, at the same time as announcing his loan move, signed a new long-term extension to his contract with Arsenal."

This snippet may start to offset my disappointment at Liverpool pinching Jack Hobbs from under our noses...

Arsenal vice-chairman David Dein has been holding talks in Seville about a possible move for Brazilian forward Julio Baptista as the Gunners look to strengthen their strikeforce.

However, although Dein also stopped off at the Nou Camp to speak to Barcelona president Joan Laporta, the future of Thierry Henry was not on the agenda for serious discussion.

Arsene Wenger has revealed his intention to make two "world-class" signings this summer and Arsenal have already agreed terms on a deal that could be worth up to £10million for midfielder Alexander Hleb.

The Belarus international must still undergo a medical and requires a work permit, but Arsenal are hopeful that the deal can be finalised next week.

Indeed, the club's attentions have already turned to a new striker, with Jeremie Aliadiere having joined Celtic on a one-year loan deal despite also signing a new long-term contract at Highbury.

The Gunners were initially linked with Santos striker Robinho but he appears bound for Real Madrid and Baptista, who could also cost around £10million, has now emerged as the club's main target.

Wenger watched the 23-year-old Brazilian international, who has won 11 senior caps, in action at their recent success in the Confederations Cup tournament.18 goals in 33 games last season, not sure if we need a striker though... I'd prefer a good young English right back...

Bummer... :( I thought he was Red through and through... it makes me wonder what a club has to do these days to keep hold of a player for life!

Steven Gerrard has spoken of his anguish at choosing to quit Liverpool - but that pain is nothing compared to the misery of the supporters he will leave behind.

Just 41 days after he lifted the European Cup and declared his intention to stay at Anfield, Gerrard has told Reds officials he wants to leave.

"The last six weeks have been the toughest of my life and the decision I have come to has been the hardest decision I have ever had to make," he said.

While his precise destination remains unknown, it appears to be only a matter of time before Chelsea increase the offer - reported to be £32million - which was rejected by Liverpool and add the England international to their championship-winning squad.

After Gerrard's agent Struan Marshall informed Reds chief executive Rick Parry of the 25-year-old's decision to snub a £100,000-a-week contract offer, which would have made him the highest paid player in the club's history, Liverpool insiders privately claimed it is immaterial whether a formal transfer request is lodged or not. The battle to keep him is lost.

Even as the celebrations began following Liverpool's stunning triumph in Istanbul, it appears Gerrard was starting to have doubts over his long-term future.

Those fears were exacerbated by a failure to open swift discussions over a new deal.

And when he arrived for negotiations with Parry last Wednesday to extend a contract which still has two years to run and instead of being offered a deal was asked what terms he wanted, the player's patience snapped beyond repair.

Stunned by such a swift downturn in the relationship, Parry had hoped to salvage the situation with his big-money offer last night.

But the news he dreaded was relayed to him by Marshall at lunchtime, shortly after Gerrard had driven out of Liverpool's Melwood training complex - possibly for the last time.

Weird series of events wouldn't you say?

Steven Gerrard has decided to stay at Liverpool following late-night talks with chief executive Rick Parry.

Gerrard seemed certain to quit the Reds on Wednesday after it was revealed that he had told the club he wanted to leave following the collapse of new contract talks.

But Parry told Sky Sports News: "Stevie had decided to stay. The last few days have been so difficult for him and I apologise to Stevie if I misread his emotions. But, in the last 24 hours, he has reflected on it and decided to stay and it's what we wanted all along."

Spurs sign Davids??!!!

http://www.spurs.co.uk/article.asp?hlid=294527

The Club is delighted to announce that we have signed Edgar Davids on a free transfer from Inter Milan. The player will undergo a medical in the next couple of days and agree personal terms.

The 32-year-old is one of the finest all-round midfielders in the world, combining well-developed technical skills with tough tackling and a will to win.

Head Coach Martin Jol commented: “He is one of the most versatile midfielders, a ball-winner with great stamina and huge charisma and one of the best midfielders to come out of Holland in the last 10 years.

“This is a player who went to Barcelona when they were middle of the league and took them close to winning the title.

“It’s terrific that he is joining us. This is the player we have spoken about who will lift the team’s mentality. We have a young squad with an average age of 23 and I believe Edgar will come in and lead by example.”

Davids has won 73 caps for Holland, representing the Dutch in four major finals and has played in four Champions League finals, tasting victory with Ajax in 1995.

He came through the famed youth system at Ajax where he made his debut aged just 18 and helped the Dutch giants to successive league titles in 1994, 1995 and 1996 and the UEFA Cup in 1992.

A move to Serie A and AC Milan followed in 1996 before switching to Juventus in December 1997.

He spent seven years at the Turin club during which he helped them to the final of the Champions League on three occasions — 1997, 1998 and 2003. He also bagged three domestic titles with Juventus in 1998, 2002 and 2003.

He moved on loan to Barcelona in 2003-04 and was credited with helping turn around the fortunes of the Nou Camp outfit as they finished second that season behind Valencia. He then moved back to Italy joining Inter Milan for the 2004-05 campaign.

Internationally, he has represented the Dutch for over 10 years including appearances in the semi-finals of the 1998 World Cup and of the European Championships of 2000 and 2004.

It sounds like a done deal, but i wouldn't be surprised if it all goes **** up. Just the sort of player i wanted to see at Spurs. :D

Other news, Liverpool flop Nunez departs Anfield, maybe to be followed by Newcastle underachiever Viana.

Liverpool winger Antonio Nunez has signed a three-year deal with Celta Vigo.

The former Real Madrid wide man was deemed surplus to requirements by Rafa Benitez after a disappointing season at Anfield.

Nunez is now heading back to La Liga and Celta president Horacio Gomez was delighted with the acquisition.

"The operation with Liverpool for Antonio Nunez is closed," said Gomez.

"We just need to wait two days to receive all the documents from Liverpool. It is an excellent deal for us."

Vigo are still in the hunt for Manchester United midfielder Kleberson, but the talks with The Red Devils are making slow progress.

Gomez also revealed that they are stepping up their pursuit of Newcastle's Hugo Viana.

Celta face competition from German side Stuttgart for the unsettled Portuguese star, but the Spaniards are ready to fight it out for his signature.

"The subject of Kleberson is very difficult with Manchester United.

"We also have an interest in Hugo Viana and the negotiations have been initiated with Newcastle and we know that other clubs are interested in the player."

Not quite the done deal they made out on the Spurs website...

Tottenham may have prematurely announced the signing of Edgar Davids after his lawyer claimed the Dutchman was still weighing up offers.

Spurs claimed on Tuesday night that they had agreed a deal with Inter Milan and were close to agreeing terms with Davids about a switch to White Hart Lane.

But it is thought that Everton are also in the race for his signature, and they can offer the added bonus of European football.

Rob Geerling told The Guardian: "Edgar has offers from several British clubs, who are talking to Inter. Edgar is waiting to see what is happening with those clubs.

"Edgar likes to play at the highest level; there are pros and cons for all the relevant clubs."

But Geerling did hint that his client's relationship with Tottenham coach Martin Jol could swing the balance in their favour, saying: "He knows the player and he knows his qualities, and it is vice versa for Edgar."

More news: Vassell signs for Man City

Darius Vassell has completed his £2m switch to Manchester City from Aston Villa after passing a medical.

City boss Stuart Pearce moved to sign the 25-year-old England striker with some of the £21m he received from Chelsea for Shaun Wright-Phillips.

Vassell, who had one year left on his Villa contract, scored only three goals in 21 league games last season.

Villa are expected to use the money to make an increased offer for Liverpool's £7m-rated striker Milan Baros.

But Villa boss David O'Leary insisted he was not forced to sell Vassell to raise cash to pursue his transfer targets.

"It's not fair to say I had to sell Darius to bring in money. That would be totally unfair on the club," Villa boss David O'Leary told the club website.

Vassell, who was born in Birmingham, has scored six goals for England in 22 international appearances.

A statement on City's official website read: "He is likely to make his first-team debut in one of the coming weekend's two friendly fixtures, away at either Stoke City or Sheffield Wednesday."

He made his debut for Villa at the start of the 1998/1999 season in the 3-1 win over Middlesbrough.

O'Leary added: "I've got a budget where I have to try and get players in, but that's nothing to do with the Darius deal.

"He had a year left on his contract, we've been offered good money by Manchester City, so it suits everybody all round as it stands."

The Club is delighted to announce that we have completed the signing of Edgar Davids on a free transfer from Inter Milan.

The Dutch midfielder finalised terms and is available to play in Saturday’s friendly against FC Porto at White Hart Lane.

Head Coach Martin Jol said: “I know everybody is very excited, he is a big player and the one we wanted.

“Edgar Davids is probably one of the most successful players of the last decade, he has played for five of the biggest clubs in Europe and he wants to play for Spurs.

“All of our players are ambitious and know why we have brought Edgar in — because both mentally and physically we need to go up a step or two.”

Davids has won 73 caps for Holland, representing the Dutch in four major finals and has played in four Champions League finals, tasting victory with Ajax in 1995.

Good choice by l'OM if you ask me...

Marseille have confirmed that they are set to sign Bobo Balde from Celtic on Monday.

The Guinean international looks to be out of favour under new Bhoys chief Gordon Strachan and he is now letting him leave Parkhead.

Balde has been with Celtic since 2001 when Martin O'Neill snapped him up from Toulouse.

The giant central defender is a cult figure and he snubbed summer moves to Middlesbrough and Birmingham to stay with Celtic, but that was before O'Neill quit as coach.

Marseille have moved for Balde ahead of Serbian striker Danijel Ljuboja after deciding that they need their defence bolstering rather than their forward line.

l'OM sporting director Jose Anigo confirmed the deal was almost done.

"Sure with Blade, that should be done," said Anigo.

"I have seldom seen somebody who has expressed such a desire to join us.

"He knows the club and is ready to leave a strong contract in Glasgow to come to Marseille.

"He has a strong personality and has all the essential qualities of a good defender."

Godammit, ANOTHER good young English player looking like he's leaving :x #-o

David Bentley has reportedly asked to leave Arsenal as he looks for a club that can offer him regular first team football.

The England Under-21 star has been a promising talent at Highbury ever since drawing comparisons with Dennis Bergkamp as he scored an exquisite lob against Middlesbrough in the 2004 FA Cup.

To further his progression the winger spent last season on loan at Norwich although The Canaries were prevented from seeing the best of the 20-year-old due to injury.

Bentley has always been impatient to break into Arsene Wenger's plans and looked to be growing in stature as he featured prominently in The Gunners' pre-season tour to Austria and the victorious Amsterdam Tournament campaign.

However the arrival of Belarus international Alexander Hleb has provided yet another obstacle for the Englishman to overcome, and he failed to even make the substitutes bench in the Community Shield defeat to Chelsea.

Bentley had then been expected to captain Arsenal's reserves against West Ham on Monday, although the gifted youngster was withdrawn before kick-off.

After apparently failing to enhance his standing in Wenger's eyes, Bentley has now reputedly handed in a transfer request in an attempt to end his time at Highbury.

Both Norwich and Crystal Palace have been linked with an ambitious attempt to secure Bentley's services on a season-long loan deal, although Premiership outfit West Ham have been rumoured to be interested in clinching a permanent deal. Skysports.com 12/08/05

It's dragged on longer than a Hollyoaks' storyline...

Lyon have confirmed a deal has been struck with Chelsea for the sale of Ghanaian midfielder Michael Essien.

The Premiership champions have been pursuing the powerful African for the majority of the summer, but Lyon were adamant they would not lower their demand for upwards of €35 million.

The deal appeared to flounder earlier in the month, but the lines of communication were reopened recently and it emerged over the weekend that Chelsea had tabled a bid which met with approval from Lyon.

Lyon chairman Jean-Michel Aulas revealed earlier on Monday that the midfielder was set to move on this week and the French club have now confirmed a €38 million deal has been struck.

Chelsea have yet to make an official announcement, but Essien is expected to sign a five-year deal provided he passes a medical later on Monday.

Essien's displays for Lyon in the UEFA Champions League caught the eye of a clutch of clubs, and he has a huge reputation, but he will have to make an immediate impact if he is to force his way past Frank Lampard, Claude Makelele, Joe Cole and Tiago in the central midfield pecking order.
At £26m, they reckon he'll need to force his way past them? Oh wait... SWP...

The day's OTHER big bit of transfer news

Sunderland keeper Mart Poom is in talks with Arsenal over a move to Highbury.

Gunners chief Arsene Wenger is still searching for an assured pair of hands to push Jens Lehmann and Manuel Almunia for the number one spot at Highbury.

Uruguayan Sebastian Viera had been tipped to make the move to Highbury this summer, but a deal floundered at the last minute and this appeared to prompt Wenger to put his search for a new shot-stopper on the back burner.

However, it emerged over the weekend that the French tactician had been alerted to Poom's availability on a free transfer and it has now been confirmed that the Estonian has been in London for talks.

Poom was given permission to break off from the Estonian national squad's World Cup qualifying preparations in order to head to London, which would appear to suggest that a deal could be pushed through before the transfer window closes on Wednesday.

There has been no official word from either party, but Estonian coach Jelle Goes confirmed Poom had been in London.

"Poom needs to rest, he has a long flight from England to Tallinn behind him," said Goes at a press conference. "Things with Poom will clear up soon - whether he plays, sits on the bench or isn't involved at all."

Poom is in the final year of his contract and it is being suggested he will head to North London on a free transfer, provided Arsenal agree to the season-long loan of defender Justin Hoyte.

Hoyte is held in high regard at Arsenal, but has little chance of securing regular playing time for The Gunners this term and a loan could suit all parties.

Poom is in the veteran stage of his career, but he has proved a reliable keeper for Derby and Sunderland and would be an able deputy for Lehmann at Highbury. Skysports.com 30/08/05

Arsenal have offered a trial to Mexican youngster Carlos Vela, but the forward is eyeing a move to Spain's La Liga.

The top scorer in the recent World Under-17 Championships is believed to be training with Arsene Wenger's Gunners this week and reports claim a deal will be set up in January to sign the teenager.

However, the Chivas starlet would rather continue his progress in Guadalajara before securing a move to Spain.

"My future is in Spanish football," he declared to Es Mas. "But we should listen to the offers that will be made to know if I will leave to go abroad or I will stay with Chivas of Guadalajara. That is where I have started my career."

Real Madrid, Valencia, Barcelona and Internazionale are all prepared to battle Arsenal for the signature of a player who scored in Mexico's Under-17 final victory over Brazil.

Sources close to the player reckon he will cost in excess of £2 million and Wenger looks to have stolen a march on his rivals by getting the 17-year-old to North London.

If convinced by Vela's ability, the Frenchman must then persuade the promising talent to forget his dream of playing in Spain, particularly as Valencia are thought to be willing to match any bids for him.skysports.com 25/10/05

Arsenal have reached an agreement to sign Mexican striker Carlos Vela according to reports in the Central American country's media. Vela, 16, helped Mexico's Under-17 team win the World Cup in that age group - a first for Mexican football.

Vela's father Enrique told the Mexican media that Arsenal had agreed to pay $3.5 million (£2million) for the youngster who will play for Spanish side Valencia until he is 18.

The 16-year-old Cancun-born striker has not made his professional debut with present club Guadalajara. Enrique Vela said that the entire family except Carlos' brother Alejandro will move to Spain.

'These chances appear only once in somebody's life,' said Enrique Vela.
'I know Guadalajara wanted Carlos to stay, but fortunately everything went well and we have reached an amicable agreement with Guadalajara.'

Vela won the golden boot by netting five goals in six matches in the under-17 World Cup in Peru.

Vela will follow in the footsteps of international striker Jared Borgetti, the first Mexican to play in English football, who joined Bolton earlier this year.

Roy Keane
Roy Keane's career statistics
Roy Keane has left Manchester United by mutual consent.
United confirmed on Friday that Keane, 34, had left with immediate effect, bringing to a sudden end his 12-and-a-half years at Old Trafford.

Keane had said he was not expecting to get a new contract, with his current deal up at the end of the season.

But he criticised the side last month in an interview to MUTV, which was never shown, and that appears to have brought forward his departure.

Keane's outburst on MUTV, which is the club's own television station, came after a 4-1 defeat to Middlesbrough in which he did not feature because he broke his foot in a 0-0 draw against Liverpool on 18 September.

That game at Anfield now becomes his last game for United.

Keane's representative Michael Kennedy met United chief executive David Gill at Old Trafford on Friday to thrash out details of Keane's severance, and the stunning news was then announced.

Amazingly, Keane trained with United on Friday morning.

And, during manager Sir Alex Ferguson's weekly media conference which came before the announcement, the Scot said his captain was training well and was "not far away" from a full recovery from injury.

Sad as it is, it's for the best - for too long there's been reluctance to make difficult changes at the club

From TR
Have your say on 606

Following the announcement Keane, manager Sir Alex Ferguson and Gill all made statements of their own, with none of them mentioning any behind-the-scenes problems between the player and his club.

Keane said: "It has been a great honour and privilege for me to play for Manchester United for over 12 years.

"During my time at the club I have been fortunate to play alongside some of the best players in the game and in front of the best supporters in the world.

"At all times I have endeavoured to do my best for the management and the team.

"Whilst it is a sad day for me to leave such a great club and Manager I believe that the time has now come for me to move on. After so many years, I will miss everyone at the club.

"I send my best wishes for the future to the management, players, staff and supporters of the club."

Ferguson said: "Roy Keane has been a fantastic servant for Manchester United.

Everyone at Old Trafford wishes him well in the rest of his career and beyond

Sir Alex Ferguson

"The best midfield player in the world of his generation, he is already one of the great figures in our club's illustrious history.

"Roy has been central to the success of the club in the last 12-and-a-half years and everyone at Old Trafford wishes him well in the rest of his career and beyond."

Gill said: "Roy has been a towering figure at the club for over a decade. His dedication, talent and leadership have been qualities that have marked him out as one of the true greats.

"On behalf of everyone at the club, we wish him every success in his future career."

United's full statement read: "Manchester United has today reached agreement with Roy Keane for Roy to leave the club with immediate effect.

"The agreement allows Roy to sign a long term deal with another club to enable him to secure his playing career beyond what would have been the end of his contract at United in the summer.

"The club has offered Roy a testimonial in recognition of his 12-and-a-half years at Old Trafford.

"The club thanks Roy for his major contribution to the club during his years of service."

The specific mention in that statement of Keane's availability appears to suggest he will sign for another club, rather than retire.

That could alert Celtic, a club Keane has consistently been linked to but whose manager Gordon Strachan said earlier this season he would not discuss Keane while he was under contract elsewhere.

However, Keane is also thought to be high on the Republic of Ireland's wish-list to fill their vacant manager's role, after they saw the success Mark Hughes had when he cut his coaching teeth with Wales.

Keane won 66 caps for Ireland but retired from playing at international level last month.

Keane and Ferguson were once famously close, with the Irishman seen as his boss' spokesman on the pitch.

But the pair began to drift apart following a row at the club's pre-season training camp in Portugal last July.

That disagreement was believed to be about the quality of the set-up in Portugal and the fact that players' wives were allowed to attend.

It was also not the first time he has fallen out with a manager over a training camp - Keane famously stormed out of the 2002 World Cup because he was angered by then-manager Mick McCarthy's preparations.

He vowed then to never play for his country again while McCarthy was in charge, and duly stayed in the cold until Brian Kerr took the helm for the Republic.

Football legend George Best dies

http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/40622000/jpg/_40622830_police_pa_203.jpg George Best had suffered weeks of ill-health

Football legend George Best has died in hospital at the age of 59.
The ex-Manchester United and Northern Ireland star had multiple organ failure after a lung infection he developed last week led to internal bleeding.
Doctors on Friday had said Best was unlikely to survive the day and all they could do was make him comfortable.
He had been in west London's Cromwell Hospital since being admitted with flu-like symptoms on 1 October, later suffering a kidney infection.
Best, a recovering alcoholic, needed drugs after a 2002 liver transplant that made him susceptible to infection.
The Belfast-born former footballer and television pundit had been prescribed medication to suppress the immune system and prevent his body rejecting the new liver.

Decline of the golden boy (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/4090840.stm)

At the time of his hospital admission in October, Best's agent Phil Hughes said his client had been "off the drink" before being admitted to the hospital.
Best is widely regarded as one of the greatest players to have graced the British and world game.
His heyday occurred during the 1960s, and he brought a pop star image to the game for the first time.
But the accompanying champagne and playboy lifestyle degenerated into alcoholism, bankruptcy, a prison sentence for drink-driving and, eventually, his controversial liver transplant.
He helped Manchester United win the First Division title in 1965 and 1967 and the European Cup in 1968. His role in the team's success was recognised by his becoming the European Footballer of the Year in 1968.
Best made 466 appearances for the Old Trafford club, scoring a total of 178 goals. He also won 37 caps - scoring nine goals - for Northern Ireland.

From the BBC

Sheffield United have given Portsmouth permission to open talks with manager Neil Warnock about succeeding sacked Alain Perrin at Fratton Park.
Pompey chairman Milan Mandaric told BBC Sport the move was "a breakthrough" but still does not expect to make an appointment until early next week.

He added: "We are in the process of setting up a meeting, but there is a long way to go. We are not there yet.

"I'd also still like to talk to two or three other candidates as well."

Mandaric added: "If we can do a deal, we would still need to go back to Sheffield United about their compensation, but it is a breakthrough for us in terms of setting up a proper interview with regard to appointing a new manager."

The Blades agreed to let Warnock meet Pompey after pondering an official approach from chairman Milan Mandaric.

The 57-year-old is Mandaric's top choice to take over from Perrin.

Sheffield United said the decision to let Warnock discuss a move to Portsmouth was taken "after long and careful consideration."

It is our understanding that if Neil Warnock gets the job, Keith will go as his assistant

Chester chairman Stephen Vaughan on Keith Curle's future

A statement from Bramall Lane added that they had "reluctantly agreed, conditional on suitable compensation, to make Neil Warnock available to speak to Portsmouth.

"The continued success of the club has been paramount to the thinking, and in these difficult times it is imperative for supporters to get behind the club."

Warnock, who has been at the club for six years, has insisted he will still be in charge for Saturday's local derby against Sheffield Wednesday.

He has overseen the Blades' impressive start to the season, but his contract ends in June and he is waiting on a new one.

It seems certain that if Warnock does get the job at Fratton Park, he will approach Chester with a view to taking their manager, former England defender Keith Curle, as his assistant.

Chester chairman Stephen Vaughan said: "It is our understanding that if Neil Warnock gets the job, Keith will go as his assistant.

"We have a decent working relationship and I won't stand in his way. We can't compete with the wages or level of football they would be offering."

Curle, 42, who has also been linked with Bristol Rovers, added: "At the moment nothing has happened and all I'm doing is watching videos and reading match reports to prepare my team to face Nottingham Forest.

"It's no different to the Bristol Rovers (approach). I owe it to the supporters, players and chairman to focus on the job in hand."

Meanwhile, Rangers denied Portsmouth permission to speak to the under-pressure McLeish on Tuesday.

Portsmouth also missed out on the chance to speak to Crystal Palace manager Dowie after Eagles chairman Simon Jordan rejected their approach.

Southampton chairman Rupert Lowe insisted there had been no contact with Portsmouth over the prospect of a controversial return for former Pompey boss Harry Redknapp.

"It couldn't get off the ground without me being informed and that hasn't happened. We're just ignoring the speculation."

But Redknapp was keen to scotch rumours he could return to Pompey, a year after his departure.

"I have a job and have never been asked to go back," said the Southampton boss.

"I have a team here I still think can get out of this division.

"If I said I wanted to go back now, I would be crucified. That's all I need."

Former Hearts boss George Burley and Sir Bobby Robson are other names in the frame to succeed Perrin, who was sacked on 25 November.

Byebye Keith then it seems... :(

Warnock decides to stay at Blades

Pompey to make Redknapp move
Sheffield United boss Neil Warnock has decided to stay at the Championship club despite being approached to take over the vacant job at Portsmouth.
Warnock was given permission to speak to Pompey chairman Milan Mandaric, but he said: "We had a good conversation but at the end I knew I wanted to stay.

"I think there's politics involved in Portsmouth and I don't want to get into that. I don't need the hassle."

"It's nice to have everything cut and dried and to know what we are doing."

Warnock admitted he had been tempted by a move to the Premiership but was happy to pledge his future to the Blades.

"The decision's been made and I'm staying put. We've had a word with the players and we've got a tough game on Saturday - what's gone is gone and we move on.

"At the moment I run the club and I've got tremendous backing, a great bunch of lads and the best team I've ever managed."

Sheffield United plc chairman Kevin McCabe was delighted to see Warnock agree to stay at Bramall Lane.

"We are delighted Neil Warnock's future remains here," said McCabe.

"I have been able to show Neil - and he has recognised - he has a key role in shaping our quest for the top flight.

"I wish the Portsmouth saga had not started but in the end the outcome demonstrates the importance of the relationship between a chairman and his manager."

Warnock has been at the club for six years but his contract ends in June and he is still waiting on a new one.

Phew... Atleast that means Keith Curle is staying with Chester then :)

Okay, they are older than the rest of the squad, but surely quality is quality?

Bolton have confirmed that veteran players Jay-Jay Okocha and Bruno N'Gotty are to leave the club. Bolton boss Sam Allardyce said the pair would not be returning to the Reebok Stadium next season following the final day game with Birmingham.

Nigerian Okocha has been at the club for four years while French defender N'Gotty joined in January 2002. Sam Allardyce said: "We want to reduce the age of our squad and it was a tough decision not to offer new deals." Allardyce was keen to pay tribute to the two players who have key instrumental in the club's recent success.

He told the club's official website, www.bwfc.co.uk (http://www.bwfc.co.uk/): "Jay-Jay and Bruno will go down in Wanderers folklore. "Not only for what they brought to the club in terms of experience and quality, but also for what they helped us to achieve during their time here.

Defender William Gallas has told Chelsea he wants to leave the club. The Frenchman, 28, moved to Stamford Bridge from Marseille for £6m in 2001 and has proved a stalwart in their back-to-back Premiership titles.

Now Gallas, who claims AC Milan want to sign him, has said: "My decision has been taken and is definitive: I want to leave Chelsea.
"I want another challenge. I've been with Chelsea for five years. I want to experience another league."

Speaking to L'Equipe, Gallas suggested the San Siro was his most likely destination. "The directors of Milan are interested in me, and I am interested in the idea of going to play over there. Gallas said his request was "not a question of money" amid reports that he has been unhappy playing at full-back, away from his preferred role at centre-back.

Earlier this month Gallas had given a pointer to the way he was feeling.
"I have been here five years and maybe that's enough. I am a man who wants to win everything and I want to do that in different countries," Gallas said.

The Frenchman, who has made more than 200 appearances for Chelsea in his five years at the club, has one year left on his Stamford Bridge contract.

Pires 'will sign for Villarreal'

http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/41579000/jpg/_41579324_piresemp203.jpg Pires joined Arsenal from Marseille for £6m in 2000

Arsenal midfielder Robert Pires will be unveiled as a Villarreal player next week, according to the Primera Liga club's president Fernando Roig.
"Next week Robert Pires will arrive," Roig was quoted as saying on Spanish TV station Canal Nou. "After the Champions League final Pires will be a free agent and will do the presentation with Villarreal."

French international Pires, 33, is expected to start Wednesday's Champions League final against Barcelona. His Arsenal contract runs out at the end of the season and the London club have only offered him a one-year deal.

Pires recently admitted he had held talks with Villarreal, who were beaten by Arsenal in the Champions League semi-finals. But he added: "I haven't made a decision yet. I've played many years at Arsenal and it's a difficult decision to make."

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger has said he wants Pires to stay. "He is completely free to speak with whom he wants. I am not shocked by that and can understand that," said Wenger. "I just hope that in the end he will say 'I will stay one more year at Arsenal'."

Villarreal announced on Tuesday they had agreed terms with Real Sociedad's Turkey striker Nihat Kahveci.

Arsenal were on Monday night reported to have signed Czech Republic midfielder Tomas Rosicky from Borussia Dortmund. It was claimed in Rosicky's homeland the 25-year-old had passed a medical in London and signed a contract with the Gunners.

The playmaker will play for the Czechs at the World Cup this summer and has scored 15 goals in 53 appearances for his country. According to the reports, he was allowed to leave the Czech training camp in Austria to finalise the transfer.

Rosicky had been expected to sign for Atletico Madrid, with whom he had been repeatedly linked. The 25-year-old cost Dortmund £18million when he joined from Sparta Prague in 2001 - a Bundesliga record.

Japan midfielder Hidetoshi Nakata has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 29. Nakata, who spent last season on loan at Bolton, played his last game at the World Cup as Japan bowed out at the group stage after losing 4-1 to Brazil.

"I decided half a year ago that I would retire after the World Cup in Germany," Nakata told his official website. "I will never again stand on the pitch as a professional player. But I won't stop playing the game."

Nakata joined Bolton in August and scored one goal in 21 league appearances. Bolton boss Sam Allardyce paid tribute to Nakata but said he was not shocked at the midfielder's decision to retire at such a young age. "The news isn't a surprise as far as I am concerned," he said. "Hide has had the time to think about his future and has decided the best outcome is to hang up his boots. "He's had a glittering career and has achieved plenty in the domestic game.

"He will be remembered as the catalyst of Asian and Japanese football, and also the first Japanese export to European football.

"It was a privilege to work with him last season, and I'd like to wish him well. "He will always be welcome as a guest at this football club in the future." Nakata spent seven years in Italy's Serie A, where he played with Roma, Parma, Bologna and Fiorentina.

In 2005 he was honoured with one of Italy's highest awards - Knight of the Order of the Star of Italian Solidarity - for helping to promote Italy's image overseas.

During WC in germany, average of goals per match was very low ( 2,27 ) and FIFA think about revolution in football rules. Sepp Blatter, President of FIFA, even thinks about possibility of decrease of number of players in teams from 11 to 10, as well as it thinks of increase number of goals in matches. Next his idea are goalkeeper limitations, who could catch ball by hands in goal field only (5 metres). Blatter calls for common discussion all experts, who can contribute to make football more attractive. Everything will take a lot of time, because all of their thinkings must be checked in youth tournaments. Of course actually all of this are thinking and we will see how will look football in future

Not unexpected but a sad loss.. thanks Sol :D

Arsenal have announced that defender Sol Campbell is to leave the club so he can seek a "fresh challenge". Campbell, 31, made 197 appearances for the Gunners after joining the club from arch rivals Tottenham in 2001.

"It is with a sense of pride, achievement and the desire for a fresh challenge that I depart," he said. Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger added: "Sol has been a giant for us but we respect his decision to move on and of course, we are very sorry to see him go."

Since his controversial move across North London in 2001, Campbell has won five major trophies at Highbury. He was a member of England's World Cup squad, and despite signing a new three-year contract in 2005, he has recently been linked with moves away from the club.
Turkish club Fenerbache were reportedly interested in signing the centre-back in May and Portsmouth were understood to be interested in taking him to Fratton Park.

Campbell added: "Playing abroad is something that would really interest me but at the moment I am keeping all of my options open. "I would like to thank Arsene Wenger for everything he has done for me, the world class players that I have been privileged to play alongside and accomplish so much."

The departure means that Campbell's last game for Arsenal was the Champions League final in which he scored the Gunners' goal in a 2-1 defeat. Campbell walked out of Highbury after being withdrawn by Wenger against West Ham in February and struggled with fitness and injuries leading up to the clash with Barcelona in May. Wenger attributed Campbell's early departure down to "exceptional circumstances" and said that he was going through a "difficult period" in his life.

The Frenchman added: "His desire and presence have been instrumental to our success over the past five years. "Sol was at the heart of our defence and he will take away with him many fantastic memories, which he richly deserves. "Winning two Premiership titles, three FA Cups and scoring in the Champions League final against Barcelona will surely be highlights he will treasure.

"I know that the younger players, who have progressed here over recent times, have benefited hugely from playing alongside Sol." Campbell made his 69th international cap in England's final group game against Sweden and featured in three World Cups and two European Championships.

I got this from Eto'o's Wikipedia.

On February 11, 2007, in a match with Racing Santander (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Racing_Santander), Eto'o refused to come on as a substitute; manager Frank Rijkaard (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frank_Rijkaard) said 'He did not want to come on, I don't know why'. Ronaldinho (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ronaldinho) was critical of Eto'o, saying 'it always is important to think about what's best for the team'. Eto'o responded by saying 'Telling a news conference I didn't want to play is the behaviour of a bad person', explaining that he did not come on because he did not have time to warm up properly. Eto'o and Ronaldinho have since reconciled. Later, Eto'o denied calling them 'bad people'.

Manchester United have announced that they have agreed to buy exciting Brazilian youngster Anderson from Porto and Nani from Sporting Lisbon. Terms have been agreed 'in principle' with the club for the young midfielders, who can also play wide or up front.

A United statement said: 'Personal terms have been agreed and a formal announcement will take place once the necessary administrative procedures, including a medical have been completed.'

Looks like Man Utd is going to have a great players from some of the toõp teams of Portugal.

Guess I'll just post the topic of the day.
Henry on brink of Barca move

http://soccernet-akamai.espn.go.com/design05/images/domr/thierryhenrybarca412_al_g.jpg

Barcelona claim they have agreed a £16million fee for Thierry Henry.
Thierry Henry - Your View (http://home.skysports.com/list.aspx?hlid=473414)
Reports in Spain have emerged suggesting the Arsenal striker has signed a four-year deal with Barcelona.
Cadena Ser radio, the station that broke the news of David Beckham (http://home.skysports.com/list.aspx?hlid=473412&CPID=8&clid=3&lid=4161&title=Henry+on+brink+of+Barca+move#) and Zinedine Zidane's moves to Real Madrid, have stated that Barcelona will pay €24million (£16million) for the Arsenal forward.
The station, which quotes Barcelona officials, says Henry has already put pen-to-paper on a contract spanning until 2011.
Spanish newspapers have also reported the story, but a spokesman from Barcelona has told Sky Sports News that the deal is not yet finalised.
The spokesman claims Henry's move is 'not totally done and dusted' and has insisted that discussions are still ongoing between Arsene Wenger and his Barcelona counterparts.
Barcelona have been tracking Henry for over 12 months, despite the Frenchman signing a long-term deal with The Gunners last summer.
The Catalan giants are looking to strengthen this summer after losing out to Real Madrid in the Spanish title race.
And after Arsenal's disappointing season in the Premiership it appears Henry has made the decision to continue his career at Camp Nou.
Speculation about his future has continued to mount in recent weeks, especially since the departure of David Dein.
An official announcement is expected on Monday.

Master Chief123
06-29-2007, 02:34 PM
Whoop de doo, Barcelona might be getting Lampard too. He's said that he wants the contract crap to get over and done with before the preseason starts, so if he leaves, he'll probably go there.

http://www.soccerway.com/news/2007/June/29/lampard-hints-at-chelsea-exit-as-deal-talks-stall/

D. Bent goes to Tottenham for 16 mill, Spurs' club record.

I always thought of Middlesbrough and Newcastle to be similair teams, and when they face it's always an interesting match - Viduka going to Newcastle is like him going to an enemy. :P

Henry to Barcelona I think shows that Eto'o is gone. If they're going to still play 4-4-3, I think Henry would be picked over him considering he was just bought, and I really really doubt a player in Eto'o's class would like to be a substitute. Bring Eto'o to the EPL!

Malouda to Chelsea? Bring him on. Robben to Real Madrid? Bad idea.

Klose, Toni, Ribery, Schlaudraff, Altintop, and Ze Roberto(coming back), all going in to Bayern, while Pizarro(to Chelsea! :)), Makaay, Salihamidzic leaving.

Wouldn't be surprised if Nani or Hargreaves took 8. Nani was 18 at Sporting, no?

Apparently Newcastle want Chelsea's Geremi. I wouldn't want to sell him or SWP, just grab perhaps a wide midfielder or winger(Malouda, he's said he wants to come to Chelsea), and a RB. We got Ben Haim and on loan Alex back, with Sidwell(not sure why, unless he's meant to replace Frank?)for CM and Pizarro for striker.

Also I'm hoping Tevez stays at West Ham, he's been amazing for them and the fans love him. Atleast stay for another season.

Yeah, it's still sad to hear about Henry leaving for me. He was almost a symbol - when I thought of Arsenal, I'd think of him.

Forlan might've been half decent, but since he went to Athletico(why? no point, Villareal are better anyways) Torres looks more likely to leave.

Fabrizio Gatti
07-04-2007, 03:59 PM

And crap, I would have preferred him to go to England :(

Master Chief123

Torres is at Liverpool.

Geremi is at Newcastle(Noooooooooooooooooooo :()

Forlan should've gone to England, I agree. He now has the quality to eventually adapt. On Villareal he scored more than a goal every other league game! :blimey:

Apparently Chelsea's interested in Royston Drenthe, which to me is the player who stood out in the Netherlands U-21 vs. England U-21. I was thinking we should go for him - we need a new winger(he also can play on the wing), especially if SWP or Robben goes.

Daniel De Ridder, U-21 Netherlands star joins Birmingham, and perhaps you've seen Maceo Rigters' goal vs England, the equalizer? Well he's now at Blackburn. Welcome to the premiership, it's always nice to get young talent.

The latest and most amazing news, in my opinion, are related to Manchester.

The bought a young player, nine years old Rhain Davis from Australia. He has the talent of a young Cristiano Ronaldo but that isn't the most amazing... Here it goes (make sure you are seated):

They bought it after looking at a video in YouTube that his uncle posted.

You can watch the video right here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hG47FDenyXw&e).

Amazing, isn't it?~This kid has got his football career almost settled at such a young age.

Well, a bad day for Chelsea's transfers yesterday, as Arjen Robben was sold.

Oh, and what else?

Juliano freakin Belletti was bought. Why? Why? WHYYY? I know we needed a RB, but still! Jeez!!

Um, seriously, if this was Kenyon's doing, then he's lost his mind.

If it was Mourinho, I still <3 him but this might've been one of his stupid moments.

JKMarsters

It's been quite some time since someone's posted here...

I'll be honest with you, when I used to post alot of what I say might've been outta my bum.

For one, Beletti has been fantastic, and playing very well at RB. He's quite old though, so a new young RB would be nice.

Secondly, it's good in a way we sold Geremi - he needed playing time(he's now captain at Newcastle), and while he was quality in patches he didn't quite fit in as well as I hoped he would have.

Anyways, I'll try my best to keep this thread updated now. Just to let all you guys know, I'm still very active and I plan to be for a long time, just not posting as much. :)

Now that Jose's ruled out of the job, and for a few he was almost looking like he was already comfirmed to be coach, who'll do the England job? What do you bunch think? Who's going to be the one to take on this task?

I can find it ridiculous, personally, that England are so high on the list of NTs that people support without having anything to do with them. Quite a few in the US love England apparently, with no connections. I have a team that I support with no connection, but this is Ukraine and they're quite unknown.

Allardyce to be out of the Toon job? Quite a few are calling for his head(none Newcastle supporters are saying he's going to be sacked), but I 've read some fans comments on the Newcastle part on www.bigsoccer.com (http://www.bigsoccer.com) (in which I post in the Chelsea section) and they've been saying he needs more time. Is it his fault, or is it the players fault? Any Toon followers around here?

Benitez apparently to be sacked too.

Arsenal v Chelsea this coming Sunday, how are you guys feeling Olsinho/JJU? How will this one go? We'll be second if we win and Pool win. Whatever, as long as Liverpool beat the Mancs there's a consolation even if the Blues were to lose. (sorry to any united fans :))

Blackburn coming up for the Blues. I think Shevchenko is starting to come back into form a little bit. He doesn't have the pace he at Milan, but he's already got 5 goals in 15 games, and when he has time to take the shot he really hammers em, like he proved vs the Scouse.
