August 2005:
A young 17 years old player from the lower divisions of Portugal has just arrived at England. He has set a goal for himself, to become the greatest defender of all times! The next couple of weeks he performed trials for several teams, but only one could see the potential in him, Oxford United. So they presented him a contract and after a few negotiations it was on every news stand in town, Oxford has got a new player, and his name is Fernando Alves! His contract consists on 500$ weakly wage, and a room in a nearby hotel fully paid for the first weak, whit a goal bonus of 195$ and a clean sheet bonus of 195$.
Alves missed his first match, because he hadn’t recovered yet from the flight, the intensive training, and the two weeks going around the country to trials. So, against his own will he was forced to watch the game from the stands. The match was in Rushden and Diamonds turfs and Oxford was victorious! Defeating the team by 1-0.
Sadly, after Nando’s intensive training he was beat and could not play so a team mate (not going to say who) offered him a pack of drugs and said that he could pay him next month. Fernando, knowing it was illegal took them anyway and, if anybody finds out, he could be in a lot of trouble.
Nando was now in the poor house, he was set up by his friends to meat Mike Nash, a professional guru to get his confidence up and running. It was a success! But the only problem, was that they did not tell him that the bill was for him, so he made an agreement whit him to pay him when he got the cash for it and shockingly… He accepted.
The next game was against St. Albans and this time Nando was picked to represent his team in the starting eleven. He made, what a local news paper said, “an excellent debut”, due to his “good Performance” and “good passing”. He was taken off the pitch at the 79th minute, whit the fans chanting his name. The match was already won, a staggering 3-0 putted Oxford in second place. Alves in a post-match interview said that having a good team like Oxford and the fantastic fans this team that supported him since day 1 is all that it takes to become the best.
The game against Morecambe was the second game that Fernando participated on his career. Alves was considered by a local newspaper a “clever player” and his “reasonable passing” made some quick attacks that troubled the Morecambe defenders. Both teams where separated by just one goal, however three points are always won either you win by one or five goals of difference. The game ended 1-0 for Oxford United. Oxford is still in second place whit 9 points, along side Stevenage (first place) and Dagenham and Redbridge (third place), both whit 9 points.
Two days after the game, what started as a friendly tease ended in an argument whit Alves coach and he received two stitches over his eye after he was hit whit a plastic cone in that particular spot. The coach says is sorry and ask for forgiveness, Fernando had two choices; he could either go to the press or keep quiet. To the coach happiness he laid low and did not tell the press.
It was 24 of August and there wasn’t a cloud in sight, in other words, there were spectacular conditions for a great match of football to be played. Fernando Alves played one of the worst matches of his career but he still managed to play a rather fine game. According to a local newspaper Nando performed “good passing”, but was “completely exhausted in the end”. This game was just “a mere glimpse of Alves’s potential” and if he trains more, he might join he greats on the world best football clubs. Fernando might not have played his best but the game still ended at 2-0 against Halifax Town. The 1st, 2cd and 3rd positions did not change despite the positive result of Oxford.
Just three days ago Nando played the worst game of his short career, but today it was totally different! Alves “was influential”, thanks to his “good passing” he made an assist that decided the game. His “performance was outstanding”! This is a memorable day because he “got the first man of the match award of his career”, and when asked about it in the post match interview he said he owed it all to the team! However, every player knows that there is always room for improvement; therefore he still “needs to work on his stamina”. “Just one goal separated” Gravesend and Northfleet from Oxford United. The game ended at 0-1.
The last day of month a game occurred, it was Oxford United against Exeter City. In the centre of the defence was Fernando, a bright young star, trying to make it in the football business. He looks like he is doing right! “Alves at times was brilliant”; “Alves passing was solid”; “Alves made his mark, setting up a goal” – these are some quotes of newspapers about Nando’s performance. But not all is roses in his world. “Alves got his name in the book” after a horrible foul made against an Exeter City player. On the other hand, Oxford made a spectacular ending of the month winning 3-0 and capturing the first place of he conference division.
