Sensational Soccer Beta 3

Ok, i haven't fixed many of the issues that were occuring before but i've been working on the online mode. This probably still doesn't work but i need you guys to tell me if it does or not. :)

Please extract the files over your existing Sensational Soccer files then run the exe.

Please make sure you are running in Windowed mode (Options).

You will see an Online menu. Click this.

If there are any games being hosted they will appear in the list. (This list currently shows other blitzbasic games that are nothing to do with Sensational Soccer. If you click on them the program will timeout and you will have to restart it.)

Click on a siread game. A black window should pop up. Tell me what that window says, and how far you get.

You can also host a game by clicking host. Enter a name then wait for someone to join your game.

It's more than likely that this games won't actually connect, and I've no idea what happens if someone tries to join an existing game that is already in progress (if that's possible) but i'd like to know all outcomes. :)

So far I've played just a few matches but in the two last ones (Milan-Juventus and Barcelona-R.Madrid) the match seems ok until this rain-like sound comes in and its somewhat annoying to hear something you dont even see (rain) or at least it sounds like that. All the other things like menus and radar look great.

One way would be to save game settings to text file.
In SS, you decide ie. match length, kit colors, your name etc. and game saves them to file.

When server is launched, it loads settings from file.

Played a game with someone online at Sensational Soccer. I went Dundee, he went Sunderland.

I won 3-2, I was hosting. Only one real bug was corners, I couldn't move the direction arrow.

It looks like everyone is getting the "timeout error" except the one game with me and si.

Si, perhaps you forgot to include a dll or something. That would explain why you're the only one that could client.

A couple of suggestions, si.

1. A chat in game system similar to net soccer. It would be good to have this during the beta stages anyway, so we know who where playing, what bugs we are finding...etc

2. A message saying..."opponent has left game." when they disconnect from the game.

That's all I can really think of at the moment anyway.

exactly. but in the game ur players run slowly (u may have quit at this point), my players run normally and wen the ball goes out of ply, nothing happens.

I had another game with someone, I think it was statto. I won 2-0.

I noticed that when hosting, you've got to wait on you're opponent picking a team before picking yours otherwise it'll disconnect you're opponent.

Good game Footiemad :)

Played Dundee vs Los Angeles Galaxy and lost 2-0. I chose the Galaxy but appeared to play as Dundee. Also, keepers didn't switch at halftime. The lack of the power bar was killer as well to my chances.

Currently hosting a match right now, don't know who I'm playing, must have disconnected them?. This is sweet but there's a lot of work to be done obviously Si...

Yes, lots of work to do, but it's a start. All i was hoping to achieve with this version was some form of online play. The next version should be a little bit better and we'll just keep on improving it. :)

BTW for sensational the players still switch way too often. Is there a way to make the changing between players a little bit longer, especially when the ball isn't near to them?

It's quite amazing what si has achieved with his sensational engine.

I vaguely remember the first beta version with blocks instead of people, no animations...etc. Now the sensi engine is in glorious 2d with animations and most importantly it's fun to play.

Si has impressed me further by creating a working online mode for the sensational engine. I was expecting this feature on NSS4 or NSS5.

You continue to deliver what the customers want. Only problem is...the customer's are going to run out of ideas some time.

I'd just like to say...keep up the good work, si.

Addictive, infinitely addictive indeed.

A small advice: if you are able to create a PSP conversion of this game, it will be a killer application, and you will be REALLY REALLY rich ;) I know it's complicated if not impossible, but is just a free consideration.

For those that have played an Online game as the client, can you tell me how smooth the gameplay was? Was it really jerky or not too bad?

Gameplay was smooth but really jumpy at first.
No arrow on the player, no circle around the ball, making it hard to figure out who I was controlling.
No power bar, making it nearly impossible to pass.
And still very fun.

Ok, i've updated the online stuff. Should be a bit more stable, but i'm sure there will still be connection problems.

Remember: Restart Sensational everytime you get a unsuccessful or even successful connection.

Sensational games will now be prefixed with "sen_" so you can see them in the online sreen. You can also check this page for current games:

If you look in the Data folder you can change your username in the "online.txt" file. Just put whatever you want in the top line. The second line is the port Sensational will use. I'm not even sure what happens if you change it. :P

I think you will notice the improvements to the client's online game if you connect successfully. :D

Oh, and you don't need to be in Windowed mode anymore.

Only the goal scorer can skip the replay (shoot button).

I've been trying to connect to szenti but it times out. We really need to work out why some can connect and others can't. Try to give as much detail as possible, especially if you changed a windows/firewall setting to get it working.

I think I've noticed another bug. When a player gets injured in the online mode, he isn't affected by it. He can still play his best.

What exactly was wrong? Was it laggy(you were pressing the buttons but it took a while for anything to happen.) or was it because there wasn't any power bar and that there?

Of course you can have a rematch when a more stable version of the game is available.

There wasn't any power bar. Well, there was, but it kept appearing randomly and I didn't have any control over it, hence why you scored that tap-in when I kicked it straight to you.

It wasn't really laggy... just hard to control. Not as fluid as SS is in single player at all.

Yeah, I forget about that. There should be a little delay before you recieve the ball for a goal kick, it would prevent stupid goals like that and be more real to life.

Hi Chaps. Another day, another beta version. :)

This one has changed the lobby slightly. Now we can see everyone else who is online. They will either be Online, which means they are in the online menu, or Available, which means they are ready to host a game. (At a later date i hope this to also show who is currently Playing.) Don't forget to change your username in the Data\online.txt file.

This info is all hosted on our own database now too, so bookmark this page to see who is online without having to load up the game:

I've changed the default port that you connect through to 15604, so please make sure you can send and receive UDP data through your firewall on that port. (If you can play QPRocky's NET SOCCER then you will be fine.)
