A tie in a cup match?

I was training/simulating my way through my first season, and was a bit confused to see that Manchester United and Milton Keynes (my team) tied in a cup match, and then Man U went on... Is there some rule about this that I just don't know? I thought it was supposed to go to penalties.

Forgot to add: I'm playing v. 3.06, in a game I just started after downloading the patch

Went on? as in for 30 minutes extra time, or just on and on?

just saw the result on the main screen; no indication that it went to penalties or anything, just 0-0.
