View Full Version : NSGP2 - Let the editing begin!

Hi chaps. Here is the 3D car model that I will be using in NSGP2. The car itself is very basic but I think it is sufficient especially as the game will primarily use an elevated camera angle.

- If you extract the zip and run the exe you can see the car with the default texture map.

- Use the cursor keys to rotate and drive the car.

- Keys - and = zoom the camera in and out.

- Keys 1-9 allow you to load different car textures. The default textures are VERY basic and simply change the colour of the car.

- Key 0 resets the car with the texture map guide. This is CarTex_0a.png in the folder and should be used to determine which part of the car the different areas of the texture map is applied to. (Green = front and rear wings, Blue = side panels etc.)

So feel free to create your own car textures using CarTex_0a as a guide. Don't feel that you need to stick to basic colours, you can use as much detail as you like. I look forward to seeing your efforts and if they are good enough I might like to use them in the game (although official car colours/sponsor decals will not be permitted.)

BTW, if you create 2 textures for each team you can have the correct helmet colours for both drivers. :)

textures should be easy enough for anyone with the will to do it, so modding keeps rather easy
@Paranhos, only if we're given a separate model file, if it is put into a package, or some file type wich can't be edited, it might not be possible.

I'm hoping someone can come up with some really nice wheels. The top tyre image is the outer side of the wheel, the lower tyre image is the inside of the wheel.

I don't think it will be noticeable from the ingame camera. It should never get that close, but we'll see.

Of course, the default driver/cockpit needs some work too. :)

I've updated the zip in the first thread. CarTex_0a now has an area for the tyre surface. :)

It also includes the mac version. Run the .app.

aww the mac version is awesome thanks Si Im gonna have a play later. Will try the mercedes I think.

Could I suggest that for people completely new at 3d editing it might be a good idea to supply a copy of the model with a text layer telling people how it is mapped onto the car. It seems pretty obvious after a few minutes but may help avoid confusion for first timers.

Just thought I'd post something I did tonight but first some quick points:

1. I forgot like a moron that Si had uploaded a new version of the texture and thus could not edit the wheel surface :doh:
2. Didn't change helmets or wheels but will change them at a later date...maybe.
3. Could someone tell me what the green area above the front wing is for?

I've just had a thought about a bit of a problem with 3d. What about circuits like monaco? how on earth are going to see the car from an angle when buildings, trees and bridges are in the way?

In NSS2010 you face the same problem when playing with the Player cam because of the stadiums but the stadiums are transparent so you can see everything.

I just noticed that i placed the virgin logo on the wrong red bit for the rear wing! !@#$%^&* lol

Not bad for a first attempt.. took for ever to understand where to paint the lines and stuff. Feel Free to use it as a guide starting off.

Might make a better one if i get the time

can anyone tell me why the end plates on the rear wings are now a complete mess? I try to add sponsors and decals but it's nigh-on impossible! They just keep splitting and tearing.

And, may I also present to you the Davies Lotus car for the new NSGP F1 season, the RD10. Among our title sponsors include Camel Cigarettes, Red Stripe Lager, Hofner Instruments, Aberlour Whiskey, John Player Special, Fina and Elf.

Indeed it was :), as will the Rated R be, it's still one of my favourite liveries. When I first designed it, I thought the gold and silver shading was very slick, I hope it transfers well to 3D.

yeah man I look foward to seeing it:D So is NSGP-3 moving to the 3d format(first there was Jackass 3d, now NSGP-3D) or is this just a flexing of your modding muscles?

Perhaps a flexing, perhaps a car pack, perhaps a full blown mod. I'd expect it will end up being the latter, I doubt the temptation to create the Nurburgring on release will be anything but irresistible, as well as a few like the New Star circuit. I'm starting to get the enthusiasm for 3D texturing, which is bad for my 67 mod on the original game, but good for dragging me kicking and screaming into the new age of NSGP!

looks great mate but when I saw it first I can't stop thinking that it reminds me of a real f1 livery possibly from the 90s but I can't place the team, I first thought it was sauber from 99 but im not sure and now its going to bug the ever living hell out of me so thanks for that.....:lol:

If it is similar to an actual livery then that is something, it's a complete original to my mind. I'll be interested to see which one it is though!

Reminds me of a young Michael Schumacher, debuting in 1991 at the Spa circuit in Belgium. Mercedes paid the Jordan team to let him race, after the previous guy retired or something? And he Qualified really well but had clutch problems or something.. I only recently read about it in an old automobile year book. :lol:

As a Portuguese guy I'll suggest Vodafone, Optimus, TMN, Meo, PT, Clix or ZON. TMN and Meo are the most common sponsors of sports in Portugal.

Quick Tip, for the Camera's up the top, these colour codes might come in handy

Fluro Orange (First Driver) - ff3c00
Fluro Yellow (Second Driver) - cdff00

If your using photoshop, just click the colour pallet, (the square thing thats what ever colour) and type in the code in the box on the bottom with the # symbol. Should be the same with other programs as well.

you would think with only one day until the new season the game is ready...I'd hate to see the game be another few weeks in the making.

Yeah, I'm afraid the decision to go 3D has been cancelled. The 3D engine just wasn't working out for me - lots of glitches, not powerful enough etc. Unfortunately this means the car designs done so far will not be used in NSGP 2. (NSGP3 - who knows?)

Anyway, I apologise for leading you guys up the garden path with this thread and wasting your time but I just don't think I could do the game justice in 3D. Also the track creation was taking far too long and probably wouldn't have been ready for months. It has been a bit of a setback for NSGP2, so I don't know exactly when it will be released but I'll be sure to keep you informed via the blog and twitter.

Too bad it didn't work out (for now). Even if it was too difficult to do at this moment it was pretty clear (in terms of planning) of what has to be done for going 3D, etc.

A number of present NSGP issues, however, seem as if they would need a lot of time and experimentation for a relatively "small" gain, as far as the casual gamer is concerned.

3D would certainly make those less important (assuming some of them would be "easy" to implement anyway) while continuing down the 2D road kind of requires all of those to be solved as a minimum for a game not to appear more as NSGP 1.5?

We'll see I guess :)

I posted this on the blog, i think it's pretty comprehensive...

Si, I would be happy to see NSGP go back to it's roots with 2D sprites and top down racing, but there are a lot of significant upgrades needed.

The AI needs further tweaking, as although it was good in NSGP 1 it was far from perfect. I think a system that suits more conservative less 'bumper car' racing would definitely benefit the series.

Tyres should be a big feature, we need separate compounds that degrade at different rates, tyre temperature that optimises tyres at certain points of the race. Moreover, cars should treat their tyres differently, and in the same way Red Bull and Brawn did last season.

Although compartmentalised damage such as wheels coming off is not particularly in the NSGP spirit, things such as engine failures should be on less reliable cars (eg: Red Bull). Each team should have a reliability statistic that dictates their likelihood of finishing the race.

The tracks should be bigger, some of them are just too small at the moment, and we are in dire need of some new track pieces such as the ever evasive 45 degree piece. The editing space too should be much bigger to allow for classic tracks such as Spa Francochamps and Nurburgring.

As for artistic upgrades, implementing a spinning wheel would not be a massive job, and would really increase the appeal visually. As would moving water, crowds and circuits rubbering in with skid marks and visible racing lines appearing over a race weekend. More animated pit lanes with mechanics and realistic pit in animations (instead of the magnetic effect now) wouldn't go amiss. And please make it so the helmets follow drivers, not the car. It makes multi season games a little annoying.

Gameplay; I think that qualifying needs Q1, Q2 and Q3 this year. It's such an integral part, and with the accurate rules would be fantastic fun, even as an extra game mode. Speaking of game modes, a time trial and challenge mode would be great, and really add diversity to the game.

Oh and please please more than anything give us programmable AI statistics

Now were talking, as far as the track editor goes I would like to have the ability to draw the track and get rid of the tiles. Have a track colour and wherever that colour is laid it becomes a drivable section, if you go off the section the car goes slow and walls would be stops. Its got to work on a MAC to.
